Orange Unified Trustee Madison Miner recently shared her proposal to segregate IEP kids into one class per grade to give GenEd a full class without any IEPs. She stated GenEd teachers told her if they wanted to teach SpecEd kids they would have gone to school for that. Ouch.

As a mom with kids who have IEPs, this was truly a hurtful statement. @OrangeUnifiedCA needs to do better with their sensitivity training. I can agree that many GenEd teachers are not receiving adequate support and training for their integrated students. But, segregated classes?

This feels like a charter school mom, who was bought a school board seat by charter school dollars, reminding special education families that they are not wanted. We can address these problems, that absolutely exist, without (again) isolating Spec Ed students from Gen Ed peers

As a side note, did the people who gave Miner her talking points explain to her who falls into the special education category? From students who require speech therapy, to learning disorders, ADHD, autism, and even GATE identified students.

To explain her plan- in a school with 2 classes per grade level she wants one class to have all the IEP kids & a few GenEd students (sorta reverse integration) with a GenEd teacher who receives a stipend for teaching the class. The other class would have more students and no IEPs

Absolutely this! Federal law states that special education students should be in the same class as gen ed students as much as possible. Packaging this pilot program as least restrictive is complete bullsh!t and would definitely lead to major legal troubles for OUSD.

Orange Unified Trustee Madison Miner has released more details of her plan to segregate OUSD special ed. The highly professional Comic Sans vibes letter explains if a student *wishes to access special ed services* they will be segregated, with a GenEd teacher & peer tutors. Fun.

I would like to specifically address Trustee Miner’s language where she repeatedly stated that if students *wish* to access special education services. I don’t **wish** to access shit. My child requires services to receive a fair appropriate education. Thats federal law.

We’ve fought too hard for kids to be in the least restrictive environment to now have an uneducated trustee tell us that gen ed teachers no longer want to teach them & gen ed kids no longer want them in class. You can put glitter on the shit you’re serving, but it’s still shit.

My kid has a hearing issue and an IEP, she wants my otherwise grade level child segregated for her hearing problem? Does she not understand IEPs touch alllllll kinds of students?

I don’t think she cares.
