Orbit is not space. Elon: “It is actually relatively easy to get to space, but it is very hard to get to orbit. This is easily a hundred times harder… maybe a thousand.” Burt Rutan’s SpaceShipOne reached the edge of space twice without scorching the paint. Returning from true... show more

Elon Musk: Sub-orbital space requires about 1.5% of the energy needed to get to orbit. Rockets like Virgin Galactic's spacecraft or Blue Origin's New Shepard go to suborbital space, while rockets like Falcon 9 and Starship go to orbit, which is orders of magnitude harder, as Elon explains here. “The general public doesn't understand the difference between getting to space and getting to orbit. It's important to make that distinction. To do a suborbital flight, you need a terminal velocity of around Mach 3. To get to orbit, you need a terminal velocity of Mach 25. It's a huge, huge difference because the energy required to do that scales with the square of the velocity. Suborbital might be nine units of energy. Orbital is 625 units of energy. Only about 1.5% of the energy of orbit is required to get to sub-orbit.” Interview with Charlie Rose, August 11, 2009

“Starship is fully reusable, but will have twice the payload to orbit of the next biggest rocket that made it to orbit, which is the Saturn V. In fact, without reusability, Starship would have about 400 tons of payload to orbit.”

ELON MUSK: "The most obvious one is actually solar powered AI satellites, sort of to move the AI to orbit and essentially deep space over time, because there you can actually access over a billion times more energy from the sun in deep space than you can on Earth. The scaling to Kardashev, which is using some non trivial amount of energy from the sun. You kind of have to do space solar power. Like to even use a millionth of a percent of the sun's energy you you really have to be have your solar power in deep space."

Elon Musk on why a fully reusable orbital heat shield is one of the hardest problems in rocketry: “No one has ever developed a fully reusable orbital heat shield. When you come in from orbital velocity, you come in like a flaming meteor - a raging ball of fire. It’s hard to have a heat shield that doesn’t partially melt or get destroyed in that process” This is exactly the brutal challenge SpaceX is solving right now SpaceX now has the most advanced heat tiles in history. These continuous V3 upgrades ensure the thermal protection system survives extreme reentry without needing complete refurbishment between flights

🇺🇸🇨🇳 The U.S. military has now publicly acknowledged deploying what it describes as space-control weapons in orbit. Brandon says America’s adversaries should take that capability seriously. But the bigger danger is what happens after the first satellite is destroyed. “You could, in the first half hour to an hour of a space war, see the unintended destruction of basically every satellite in orbit.” That is the nightmare of Kessler syndrome: debris from one destroyed satellite strikes others, generating more debris and potentially creating a cascading failure across orbit. A war in space might begin with precision weapons, but the debris doesn’t care who fired first. Brandon Weichert

SpaceX is 10xing solar power in orbit every few years Here’s the progression for Starlink: • Gen 1 Starlink: ~3,000 satellites generating ~10 MW in orbit • Gen 2 Starlink: ~7,000 satellites generating ~100 MW • Gen 3 Starlink: expected to reach ~1,000 MW - 1 gigawatt of solar power in orbit Starlink was already revolutionary for global internet But the bigger story is that every new generation is also expanding SpaceX’s orbital power infrastructure • More satellites • More bandwidth • More solar power • More capability in orbit This matters because the future is not just satellites for internet It is satellites for communications, sensing, space data networks, and eventually orbital AI compute powered directly by solar SpaceX is not just building Starlink It is building the power and communications backbone for the next era of infrastructure in space

This isn't just an animation-it's the actual orbital path of Star S2 around the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way, Sagittarius A*. For 27 years, astronomers tracked S2 as it danced around a 4.1-million-solar-mass "invisible" object. The mind-blowing part? Look closely at the orbit. It doesn't trace a perfect, closed loop. Instead, the orbit itself rotates over time, creating a flower-like pattern. This is called Schwarzschild Precession. According to Newton, gravity should keep the orbit in a fixed ellipse. But Einstein's General Relativity predicted that in extreme gravity, space-time is so warped that the orbit must space-time is so warped that the orbit must shift. In 2020, the VLT (Very Large Telescope) finally confirmed this shift, proving Einstein's theory holds up even at the edge of a black hole!

🚀 India just made space history. Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 successfully reached orbit on its very first orbital launch attempt from ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Think about how difficult that is. Most new orbital rockets don’t make it on their maiden flight. Skyroot just went from development to orbit on attempt #1. And this isn’t just a win for Skyroot. 🇮🇳 India is now the 3rd country in the world. after the United States and China, to have a private company successfully demonstrate orbital launch capability. Vikram-1 reached an orbit of roughly 450 km and completed its mission in under 20 minutes. A privately developed Indian rocket, designed and built in India, reaching orbit on its first try. That’s a massive milestone for India’s private space industry. The era of Indian private spaceflight has officially arrived. 🇮🇳🚀

Elon Musk reveals why he believes the cheapest place to put AI will be space within 36 months "The availability of energy is the issue. Everywhere outside of China, electrical output is more or less flat. The output of chips is growing exponentially, but the output of electricity is flat" "How are you going to turn the chips on? Magical power sources? Magical electricity fairies?" "Space is really a regulatory play. It's harder to build on land than it is in space. It's harder to scale on the ground than it is to scale in space" "It's always sunny in space. You don't have a day-night cycle, seasonality, clouds, or an atmosphere. The atmosphere alone results in about a 30% loss of energy" "Any given solar panel can do about five times more power in space than on the ground. You also avoid the cost of having batteries to carry you through the night" "My prediction is that it will be by far the cheapest place to put AI. It will be space in 36 months or less. Maybe 30 months" "The only place you can really scale is space. Once you start thinking in terms of what percentage of the Sun's power you are harnessing, you realize you have to go to space" "Solar cells are already farcically cheap. In China they're around 25-30 cents a watt. Now put them in space, and it's not five times cheaper, it's 10 times cheaper because you don't need any batteries" "The moment your cost of access to space becomes low, by far the cheapest and most scalable way to generate tokens is space. It's not even close" "Those who have lived in software land don't realize they're about to have a hard lesson in hardware. It's actually very difficult to build power plants"

India has <200 satellites in orbit. The United States has 10,000+. This gap is partially due to launch capacity. Skyroot isn't commercialised yet. But another limitation is satellite manufacturing. Which is why Hyderabad-based Dhruva Space plans to make two satellites DAILY!

Elon Musk: The real breakthrough SpaceX is chasing isn’t hype — it’s full reusability. No one in history has ever built a fully reusable rocket, and that’s why access to space is still insanely expensive — We’ve already landed Falcon 9 boosters over 500 times, but we still throw away the upper stage — and that alone costs as much as a small jet. Starship changes everything. When every part of a rocket comes back, space stops being exclusive and starts becoming scalable. Starship is the largest flying machine ever made — built for Mars, the Moon, and massive satellite deployment. But the real revolution isn’t where it goes… it’s that it comes back. Full reusability is the single biggest lever for lowering the cost of space in human history. Automation and AI matter — but without full reusability, space will always be expensive. Starship is designed to change the economics entirely. Prove full reusability, and the cost of reaching orbit drops by a factor of 100. That’s how Mars stops being a dream and starts being a plan.
