Giuseppe Donizetti's "Mahmudiye March", composed for Mahmud II, was played as the anthem of the Ottoman Empire for eleven years, and the "Mecidiye March" (1839), composed for his son Sultan Abdülmecid, who ascended to the throne after Mahmud II's death, was played for 22 years.
