Corn’s ability to funnel water from the canopy to the roots is truly amazing! It’s why 1/10 inch of rain in canopied corn is dry between the rows and looks like an inch fell at the base. Don’t ask how I first learned of this phenomenon…just know it’s a heavenly design!

10 years ago my focus was growing “400 bushel corn” … it gets a lot of attention, but it’s unpractical. The laws of diminishing returns cost you more than it gains you. Today I focus on capturing more value from free things. Attributes are assets if you can employ them. We’re finishing up our relay beans with the last pass here. For you to be in the right frame of mind you have to leave the mindset of maximizing monocrop yields and instead maximizing acre yield efficiently. Each day is hyper critical in the profitability of this system… that’s why even when we reach that peak ultimate practice efficiency… we’ll still be maxed at maybe 30-40% of our acres. I can only do things great within the constraints of time. I lay out all the specifics here but this is some truths I’ve learned from chasing high yields.. to conventional… no till… strip till… relay… alley… organic… grazing … Intergrazing… silvopasture Less plants require less inputs, especially nitrogen Soil temperature and WEOC drive plant growth Weed pressures come with bare soil You can index… or reallocate anything from fertilizers, chemistry, seed, etc You can cheat any system by leaning on the constraints to make the system work best Here in this specific system Follow early corn. The attributes of corn canopy, residue, N scavenge is an asset Plant wheat early. Every day in late September is worth 10x of those in late October Control weeds in the fall cheaply with good timing before you have them Control weeds in the spring and summer with timing and expedited canopy closure A great harvest plan for the wheat and the pruning of it, the straw, and the ☀️ is 10x more effective than any soil amendment or spray fertilizer. Account for the capability of single plants. They can yield 10x of a bunch of them slammed in a field competing with one another Sequencing plants allows you to stage different plant perceptions to get expressions, let live, and use their natural death to your advantage.

We mapped his commute and bought every billboard between his house and the oil field. When we finally called, he said "I see your billboards everywhere." That landed us our first oil field contract. At the time our entire operation was a $10,000 reactor built from PVC pipes from Home Depot, turning corn sugar into industrial chemicals. People keep trying to throw it away. It still works. That leaking reactor started a multibillion-dollar company. Y Combinator visited our plant in Houston. The original PVC reactor is still on the floor next to the Bioforge.

A five-day-old calf now costs $1,500. China has a 10-year plan to stop depending on US soybeans entirely. Half our corn goes to ethanol. Half our soybeans get exported. It is more profitable to sit out the season and flip your input costs than to put seed in the ground. Soybean farmers lost $100 an acre last year. Corn farmers are looking at $50 to $100 losses this year. So what is the response? Switch from corn to soybeans. Soybeans make their own nitrogen. They do not need the fertilizer corn demands. The problem is we are already oversupplied on soybeans. More soybeans on a flooded market just drives prices lower. Fertilizer prices have gone through the roof. The Strait of Hormuz disruptions made it worse. Farmers who locked in fertilizer early are reselling it instead of using it. That is how broken the commodity food system has become. Today we start a new chapter at Affinity Farms. I always remember my dad talking about grandpa bringing home the first tractor on the farm 75years ago and his dad telling him, standing behind a horse drawn plow, get that thing out of here you’re going to tear down every piece of corn in this field. I always wondered what it was like seeing that transformation, living in a time where machinery replaced horses on the farm. Today we started what I think will be transformational not just for our farm, but for so many. We parked our big planters and tractors in the shed and set loose autonomy on the farm. Handing over all of our fall seeding for cash crop barley, rye and wheat. And planting all of our corn and soybeans next spring. While far from full autonomy on the farm it’s a giant leap of faith in that direction. There will be many hiccups along the way, but it’s something worth trying! Huge thank you to AIT, Precision Planting, and Sabanto for helping bring autonomy to row cropping. And a huge thank you to the farm team for the trust and commitment as we steer through the coming challenges and opportunities! Can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Mr. Chairman, I rise in support of my amendment, which states that none of the funds made available by this act may be used to fund any grant related to any transgenic edible vaccine. Does the term transgenic edible vaccine sound far-fetched? Well, it's not. We're funding it. In fact, scientists from the University of California, Riverside, funded with your taxpayer dollars, have been studying whether they can turn edible plants such as lettuce and spinach into mRNA vaccine factories, thereby creating a transgenic edible vaccine. One associate professor at UCR explained that, ideally a single plant would produce enough mRNA to vaccinate a single person. We are testing this approach with spinach and lettuce and have long-term goals of people growing it in their own gardens. Farmers could also eventually grow entire fields of it. I don't think this is a good idea. I don't think the American people should be funding this. And I think, and I would hope, that we've learned something from the COVID experience with SARS-CoV-2, that some of our science projects aren't the best ideas. And with that, I reserve. Gentlemen from Kentucky is recognized. My colleague on the other side of the aisle talks about keeping prices low. I think there's more to it than that for the American people. He also speaks as if these vaccines, these transgenic edible plant vaccines, are only used for livestock. Well, in fact, they have been used for livestock. I'll get to that in a second. But they're also being used for people. That is the intended outcome of many of these programs that we are funding, funding with money from the USDA. What could possibly go wrong with this research? Well, we found out a few years ago when a biotech company was experimenting growing in corn a vaccine to keep pigs from getting diarrhea. What happened? Well, the next year where the corn was grown, the prior year the corn came up, and it got co-mingled with soybeans that were being grown there. It contaminated 500 bushels of soybeans, which were then co-mingled with 500,000 bushels of soybeans. And those all had to be recalled and destroyed. Luckily, they caught it. Do we want humans eating vaccines that were grown in corn meant to stop pigs from getting diarrhea? I don't think we want that to happen. Yet that almost happened, and it could happen. There's another case where the pollen cross-contaminated another crop of corn, and 155 acres of corn had to be burned. What are the cases where we're not discovering this? I think it's dangerous to play God with our food. I think we need a safe food supply. And this is about food safety. Ultimately, the people in this country need to know what's in their food. And if we start contaminating the DNA of our food with DNA from other animals or viruses, the pollen could spread, and we don't know what could happen. Today vs March 21 Little tangent here. Scared dogs don’t make puppies… I’ve been farming my whole life. In 2011 I lost my dad to cancer and the family looked at me to put out the crop. My dad made decisions. He was a leader. When I became responsible to seed, fertilize, spray, etc… 3,000 acres I knew I had 1 talent from when I was a kid. I have a memory like no other. I can tell you what hybrid I plant, pop, rate, day the last 14 years because I am engaged. When everyone was telling me exactly how to do things. I was more curious of what happens when I change a variable here or there. What was the elasticity of that decision or management. In weather forecasting they have a similar system that I was somewhat inspired by called ensemble forecasts where they change variables slightly and see how weather systems behave differently as time progresses. I could lean on my memory. I was bored AF quite honestly to do the same thing over and over again. What happens to corn if you skip a row or 2 or plant it thin or thick? Beans…can you broadcast them? Can you plant wheat with a shit tank? Can you run it over? When it’s 4” tall… what about 6” what about 13” Could you rotationally graze inside a cash crop and empower edge effect elasticity and fertilize simultaneously? It would drive some people crazy as they would wonder if you should plant 160,000 or 176000 beans per acre? What’s the difference…nothing. What’s the difference between 20” corn and 2040” corn? Full season likes the latter….early yields best crowded. Fuck around and Find out isn’t just some tic tok deal. It’s how you don’t become a scared dog. It calms your nerves as most people freak out about things that don’t really matter. Because they never had the balls to try anything else than what their dad did. Half the soybeans grown in America get exported to markets that are shrinking every year. China has a 10-year plan to stop depending on US imports entirely. Almost half the corn grown in this country goes into ethanol. Goes into your gas tank. Does not feed a single person or a single animal.
