Identity is the very beginning of an agentic workflow. Payment is the very end. If the middle does not work, neither of them gets real adoption. ERC-8004, explained. ERC-8004 is an Ethereum standard for agent identity, reputation, and verification. it defines how an agent is represented onchain, and how other agents or smart contracts can reason about it without prior trust. each agent has an onchain identity (commonly an nft). that identity points to metadata describing what the agent does, how it can be reached, and how its work should be verified. the heavy data stays offchain; the reference and integrity live onchain. Right now our experience of the internet is in jeopardy. More than half of our interactions online and onchain come from non-human actors who are not identifiable, not accountable, not verifiable. That means as we look toward a stablecoin payment and AI agent enabled future, how are we going to facilitate payments if we don't know who we're paying? How will applications, display advertising, recommendations work if the counterparty who's interacting with those interfaces and in those digital spaces can’t identify itself as agent or human, or specific human? The machine economy does not begin when robots get smarter. It begins when a machine can be paid to do something, and every party involved can prove what happened. Made with Fabric Foundation. Two systems meet in the middle of it: Agent Passport issues the agent a verifiable identity and a spending authority its owner defines, and RoboPay actuates a robot after the payment behind the request checks out. What happens before the robot moves: ▷ Authority is granted once, and it is bounded. The human signs a spending session with a passkey: a total budget, a per-transaction ceiling, the assets allowed, and an expiry. The agent holds no card number and no wallet key. It holds a delegation it cannot exceed. ▷ Two payments, because these are two different obligations. One settles with the merchant for the goods. A separate x402 payment pays the robot for the work of moving them. Buying a thing and hiring a machine to carry it are not the same transaction, and the receipt keeps them apart. ▷ Verification comes before motion. The request arrives with an x402 payment header. The facilitator checks the network, the price, the payee wallet, and the signed payload. Only then are the transaction details sealed onto the robot action event and the command published. Until that clears, the robot sits still. ▷ Every step leaves a receipt. Identity, scope, approval, both payments, verification, dispatch. When you need to know why a machine did something, the answer is a record rather than a guess. (This run was executed in a demo environment.) Agents have been paying for software for a while now. Everyone wants agent swarms. Very few people are talking seriously enough about the context layer that makes swarms useful. Even with one agent, context is fragile. Too little context and the agent guesses. Too much context and it wastes tokens, loses focus, or reasons over irrelevant noise. The sweet spot is precise context: the right knowledge, in the right structure, at the right moment. With many agents, that challenge explodes. Each agent produces decisions, assumptions, findings, summaries, risks, and partial conclusions. Unless that knowledge becomes shared, structured, and reusable, every new agent is forced to rediscover what another agent already learned. That is not a swarm. That is a crowd. Shared context graphs are what turn agent activity into agent collaboration, and OriginTrail DKG V10 brings them to life. Was just playing with some final polishing for the V10 release, and it is really powerful to see shared context graphs where multiple agents contribute knowledge into the same connected memory, with attribution visible directly in the graph ui. That matters for three reasons. First, agents can access and build on one shared memory instead of staying trapped in isolated sessions.
