What another AMAZING “coincidence” California had just passed new tax laws, if your home burns down and you don’t rebuild within 2 years (impossible in California) you lose your tax basis. Your property taxes SKYROCKET to the new values of the property “Think about a home that was purchased many years ago for $5 million. Let's say they were paying $65,000 a year in property taxes. Property goes up a lot over time, especially in these areas. Maybe the value today is $30 million. They go to rebuild it. Another person has died. A child is now fighting for their life after a train struck a car at a level crossing in Lancashire. My thoughts are with their family. You know what's really disturbing? Not just the tragedy itself. It's how normal this has started to feel. There was a time when news like this would stop the country in its tracks. Now it feels like we scroll past it, say "that's awful," and move on to the next headline. That's not because people don't care. It's because we've become desensitized. Every single day, it's another tragedy, another family torn apart, another life lost. That isn't normal. And we shouldn't let it become normal. Sometimes, it's worth putting politics aside for a moment, and remembering that behind every headline is a family whose lives have changed forever.

Landed in Johannesburg this morning, but yoh, what a ride from London. I have been flying for decades, but BA057 made me think I was about to join the ancestors last night. I laughed to myself and thought how people would have been praying in tongues had it been an African airline 🤣🤣🤣 The Airbus A380 is meant to be steady because of its sheer size, but last night it felt like I was on a small aircraft being tossed around in the sky. The turbulence was on another level, relentless and unsettling even for a seasoned traveller like me.

Another new tax is being proposed by the City of San Diego. This time the City is considering an annual $5K per bedroom tax on Airbnbs in addition to the 11.75-13.75% tax on revenue they already pay. The $5K per bedroom tax would also apply to second homes. Proponents say Airbnbs reduce longterm rental availability and drive up housing costs. However, the same Councilmember that is supporting this new tax, voted in 2022 for the existing regulatory structure that allows 1% of the housing stock to be rented on a short-term basis. Today, just 0.85% of housing stock in the City of San Diego are short-term rentals which is less than the current cap. If policymakers really wanted to force Airbnbs to convert to longterm rentals, they could simply amend the existing ordinance and lower the allowed cap on Airbnbs. By passing a new tax, instead of amending their current ordinance, this proposal seems less like a play for more housing and more like another money grab to bail out a city struggling to balance its budget.

This American family has a property that’s over 100 acres large He wanted to built a treehouse, the county told him it needed to be a specific size, so he built it that size Th country is now saying it’s considered the primary residence on the property and won’t let them build another house….. again they own 100 acres…. The reason is, is because they have an ordinance structure that says you can’t build the secondary home before the first home (and now the treehouse is considered a home) The only workaround is to pay thousands of dollars for surveyors to draw an invisible line, divide up the property so it’s now technically a separate property so they can built their primary house The government is too big.
