Abbas called the visa denial “unlawful punitive measures” and accused Israel of a“genocidal war” in Gaza and “settler terrorism” in the West Bank. Israeli delegates’seats sat empty as he spoke. He urged a unified Palestinian government over Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The visa denial for the second year is pretty telling about how this whole process is stalling. It makes you wonder what actual leverage Abbas has left in those high-level talks.

General Assembly and urged world leaders to do more to protect Palestinians. In his speech, he called for an end to the Israeli occupation and warned that continued violence and displacement threaten Palestinians’ ability to remain on their land. Abbas was forced to deliver his remarks remotely because the U.S. denied him a visa to attend in person for the second consecutive year.
