🇵🇸🎥 Palestinian professor Abdaljawad Omar explains why Israel is increasingly targeting the Jordan Valley bread basket area, which comprises more than 20% of the occupied West Bank. Seizing its fertile land and water, Omar says, would give Israel greater control while depriving Palestinians the ability to produce their own... show more

🎥 What Is Israel’s Goal in the West Bank? “The biggest prize for Israel is the West Bank,” Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar says, pointing to its roughly 5,000 square kilometers of land, water resources, and strategic geography. He describes Israel’s economic strangulation of Palestinians, expanding settler violence, and intensified occupation as part of a long-standing project to make Palestinian life unbearable enough to drive people out, while potentially creating the conditions for a confrontation that could be used to justify Gaza-style mass destruction. Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar says Israel’s election season is fueling a competition across the political spectrum over who can demand harsher violence and collective punishment against Palestinians. He also discusses analysis that Netanyahu could benefit from provoking a wider confrontation in the West Bank, using it to delay the vote, preserve his coalition, and avoid accountability. 🎥 “Settlers can kill whoever they want, they can injure whoever they want, they can beat whoever they want, they can burn whatever they want.” Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar describes settlers as the spearhead of Israel’s land-seizure policy in the occupied West Bank, operating through a revolving door with the military and with political, financial, and legal backing from the state. The lack of prosecution, Omar argues, is not simply a failure of enforcement. It is part of the system that allows settler violence to advance Israeli territorial expansion. 🎥 After Sheikh Faroukh Ramadan disarmed and killed in self-defense an armed settler attacking the Palestinian village of Tel, Israeli forces killed the unarmed Palestinian, arrested more than 50 Palestinians from the village, and moved to demolish homes across the village. Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar says that whether Palestinians resist or remain passive, Israel continues to seize land, destroy Palestinian life, and impose collective punishment. “Even if you die while being passive and not engaging in any form of self-defense, the Israelis are still finding ways and means through which to eradicate Palestinian life.” Murtaza Hussain | Abboud Hamayel (Abdaljawad Omar) | Maysa Mustafa

🇵🇸 🎥 “In many instances, you see the Israeli military actually setting a trap for Palestinians.” Ramallah-based Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar explains how the Israeli military operates during settler attacks on Palestinians. He says the military does not simply fail to protect Palestinians. In many cases, it creates the conditions for attacks, leaves Palestinians exposed to armed settlers, and then joins in the violence against those trying to defend their homes and farmland, including by firing live ammunition. 🎥 “This separation between the Israeli military and these settlers is just a fictitious separation. For us, they are both settlers. It’s just one is wearing the uniform.” Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar explains how Palestinian villagers and Bedouin communities, with no institution to protect them, organize popular civil defense against armed settler attacks by gathering together and placing their bodies between attackers and their homes, farmland, and trees. He says the repeated Israeli violence is slowly breaking a “barrier of fear.” Murtaza Hussain | Abboud Hamayel (Abdaljawad Omar) | Maysa Mustafa

🎥 The State of Armed Resistance in the West Bank Birzeit University professor Abdaljawad Omar describes a convergence of Israeli-imposed crises pushing Palestinians toward a potential breaking point: ▪️ Economic suffocation ▪️ Collapsing Palestinian Authority finances ▪️ An emerging banking crisis ▪️ Intensified movement restrictions and increasingly deadly settler attacks With organized armed resistance groups in the northern West Bank largely dismantled by Israeli forces and the Palestinian Authority, Omar does not expect an ‘intifada’ or any imminent return to large-scale armed resistance. But, he predicts more localized forms of popular civil defense, with unarmed Palestinians mobilizing to protect their villages and communities from settler attacks. He says a “barrier of fear” is slowly beginning to break, as Palestinians who adopted a largely passive posture after October 7 increasingly conclude that restraint has not protected them. What is really driving settler violence in the West Bank? In this episode of Fronts & Faultlines, Palestinian academic and writer Abdaljawad Omar traces the historical continuity between the Zionist movement, settler militias and Israeli state power. Speaking to Palestinian Youth Movement organisers Jeanine and Nihal, Omar explores the expansionist logic of “Greater Israel,” the fragmentation of Palestinian resistance, the legacy of Oslo, and why Western sanctions against settlers may amount to little more than political theatre. To understand the West Bank, he argues, we have to look beyond individual settlers and at the wider system of land expropriation, occupation, colonialism and political control. In 2025, Israeli authorities demolished at least 1267 structures on the pretext of “illegal construction” throughout the West Bank. Israeli planning and building authorities exploit Israel’s control in Area C to prevent Palestinian development and drive communities off their lands, as part of a systematic policy of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. This year, Israel demolished more structures on the pretext of construction without permits than in any year since B’Tselem began documenting these demolitions in 2006. Israel refuses almost all Palestinian requests for building permits, whether for homes, public buildings or infrastructure. As a result, Palestinians are forced to build without permits on their own private land and live under constant threat of demolition, harm to their livelihoods and displacement. According to the UN, over the past year Israel demolished hundreds of structures in the West Bank on the pretext of military needs, during operations and arrest raids targeting Palestinians. According to the report, about 32,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes in 2025 following military operations in the Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur a-Shams refugee camps in the northern West Bank.

🗺️ Israel has physically divided Gaza with 25 kilometers of earthen barriers, new analysis shows Israel has constructed more than 25 kilometers of earthen barriers inside Gaza since the October 2025 ceasefire agreement, physically dividing the territory and pushing its effective control from 53% to over 60% of the Strip, according to an analysis by Forensic Architecture based on satellite imagery. The berms — large raised mounds of earth running roughly along the “yellow line” agreed in the ceasefire — extend in many places west of that line, deeper into Palestinian territory. Israel has also fortified 38 military bases east of the line. In Jabaliya, the military has created a 300-meter buffer zone west of the line, destroying everything in its path. “The line is never where the line is said to be,” Abdaljawad Omar, assistant professor at Birzeit University, told Drop Site. “It is drawn not to mark a limit but to generate the next transgression of that limit.” 🔗 Read the Drop Site News / Forensic Architecture report at the link in reply.

Watch: Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder, Cynthia Nixon and Michael Stipe (Michael Stipe) join B’Tselem’s call to stop Israel’s Elimination Project in the West Bank. In the video, the artists and B’Tselem team members say that “Israel is carrying out a campaign to eliminate Palestinian collective existence in the West Bank.” They call on the international community to take action to stop this project and note that “U.S. taxpayer dollars are funding these crimes." Our new report, “The Elimination Project”, examines how Israel is dismantling the material, social and political conditions that enable Palestinians to exist as a society and as a collective in the West Bank: to live on their land, earn a living, maintain communities, social ties and political institutions, organize and exercise their collective rights, and uphold the possibility of a future. By violently reshaping the territory, Israel is working to permanently cement exclusive Jewish-Israeli control and sovereignty over the entire area. What is happening in the West Bank is not a series of isolated incidents. When you look closely and connect the dots, the picture is clear: this is all part of one political project. 🎥 Maysa Mustafa introduces Canary Mission and speaks to reporter Jacqueline Sweet about her investigation for Drop Site that found the secretive blacklist site is “entirely run” from Israel. Canary Mission compiles dossiers on students, academics, and activists it labels “antisemitic” — often targeting those outspoken on Palestine, with documented consequences for jobs and education. Sweet says the site’s impact escalated under President Trump, when the State Department and Department of Homeland Security used it to target foreign students for arrest and deportation — in some cases based largely on speech — even as officials admitted they did not know who was operating it. “The fact that our government is using a completely foreign organization to exert such influence on domestic policy is, I think, extremely significant,” Sweet says. ⚪️ “They Want to Terrify Palestinians — Then Steal Their Land” Diana Buttu tells Drop Site the surge in settler attacks is part of a coordinated state-backed effort to seize Palestinian land. “They start going after the farmlands… then set up these outposts backed by the Israeli army. And after they set up these outposts, they’re fortified, given electricity, and from that we see an Israeli settlement go up.” She explains this is how Israel advances annexation: drive farmers away, turn their fields into military-protected outposts, then formal settlements — leaving Palestinians confined to the 18% of the West Bank (Area A) under limited Palestinian control. "They think they're above the law. And nobody is going to stop them." Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have surged past 1,200 so far this year, at an average of six a day. Arson has become one of the most common tactics, with mosques, homes, and cars set on fire nearly daily. Drop Site's Maysa Mustafa spoke with Maisoon Ali in the village of Deir Dibwan, who has survived repeated settler attacks, including one where settlers tried to burn her home down while she and her husband were inside. Ali says she has no one to turn to. Not the Palestinian Authority, which has no jurisdiction in Area C, and not the Israeli military, which she says protects the settlers instead. Her only recourse is the country on her second passport, the U.S. — the same one whose weapons are being used against her. This week alone, at least 6 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank amid settler violence, 4 of them on Friday in a settler raid on the town of Tell near Nablus. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, that brings the toll since the start of the year to 86 Palestinians killed by Israelis across the West Bank, more than 20 of whom were shot by settlers.
