“Paradise City” is from Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 debut album Appetite for Destruction. The band wrote the chorus in the back of a rental van on the way home from a gig in San Francisco: Slash came up with the intro and melody, and Axl Rose sang the line “Take me down to the Paradise City,” with the others joining in. Released as a single in 1988, it reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart, and topped the chart in Ireland. Slash later revealed that he jokingly suggested the alternative lyric “Where the girls are fat and they’ve got big ti***es,” but the band kept the cleaner version that made the final recording. It is also the only track on Appetite for Destruction to feature a synthesizer.
