The 17 or so Americans on the hantavirus-hit MV Hondius will be the last to leave the ship today after it dropped anchor in the waters off Tenerife in the Canary Islands before sunrise. CBS News is tracking a flight that left Atlanta, Georgia on a direct course for Tenerife South Airport, just about 10 minutes from where the Hondius is disembarking passengers. CBS News reached out to the U.S. CDC and Spanish government but both did not comment. A local resident here on Tenerife told us that this island “never” gets any direct flights from the U.S. across the Atlantic Ocean - until today. Ramy Inocencio is on the ground in Tenerife.

“Leper ship” reaches the Canary Islands A ship carrying passengers infected with hantavirus has arrived near Tenerife. The infected passengers are expected to remain on board the cruise liner MV Hondius until repatriation flights arrive. Spain’s Ministry of Defense is set to transfer 14 Spanish nationals from the ship to a hospital in Madrid, where they will undergo quarantine. They are expected to be the first to disembark. After the evacuation process is completed, the vessel — with about 30 crew members on board — is expected to head to the Netherlands for disinfection. In total, eight people on board have been diagnosed with hantavirus. Three passengers have died, and one infected individual is in critical condition in a hospital in Johannesburg. Earlier, dockworkers in Tenerife staged a protest over the vessel’s arrival.
