“You don’t shoot into a slow moving car, you just step out of the way.” - Jeff Merkley I attended the Jeff Merkley town hall today and here’s what I observed: Today’s audience looked very different from the usual events I attend — almost everyone there was a voting Democrat, aged 65+ and you could tell his focus was on issues that appeal to that demographic. One of the first things he talked about was Social Security, painting it as being “on the chopping block” and positioning himself and the Democrats as the one who will protect it — clearly aiming to reassure older voters. What disturbed me most was how he addressed the recent ICE officer-involved shootings in Minneapolis and PDX. Instead of acknowledging the FACTS of these situations — Merkley chose to focus primarily on blaming ICE officers for “a lack of training” and called for the resignation of Kristi Noem. He also noted that he was skeptic of the PDX shooting because there was no video evidence and/or the federal government wasn’t releasing it, insinuating he doesnt truth them, nor should you. There was never a mention of the fact that the two suspects in PDX were TDS affiliated gang members or the fact that they are both in custody. At no point did he denounce the violent actions we’ve seen by riotors and activists or try to defuse the situation. Instead, he repeatedly emphasized anti-Trump rhetoric. Merkley also applauded Oregon’s recent legal wins regarding voter protections and mail-in elections and made those wins sound like heroic “defenses of democracy.” Now I can’t wrap up this summary without mentioning that he spoke on his publication, “10 Rules of Trump’s Authoritarian Playbook,” trying to tie everything to some broader threat narrative. In short, if you were hoping for thoughtful, balanced discussion on controversial issues like the ICE shootings, illegal immigration, public safety, affordability or our national divisions, you didn’t get it here. I was there and it was a disappointing experience. 📍St Helens, OR
