This week, I stood for the first time on the Senate floor and said to Democrats and Republicans: we are not being honest with the American people when we pretend that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid don’t need reform. We must stop kicking the can down the road. Washington’s addiction to spending is not compassionate—it’s irresponsible. Utahns understand thrift, hard work, and the importance of living within your means. It’s time Congress did too. Moody’s didn’t issue a warning. They rang the alarm. Let’s answer it—with fiscal honesty and the courage to do hard things.

Chinese birth tourists fly in, have a baby, fly home, and never come back. That child gets a Social Security number and gets to vote. It will mail ballots from China. It will collect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. All the benefits with none of the allegiance. That is not what the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment intended. They wrote it to give citizenship to the children of freed slaves. Not to hand it out to the world. Thanks for having me, Andrew Kolvet.
