Because it's easy to look at the data center stuff and be like, "Well, everyone's against building data centers." I was reflecting on the whole reindustrialization meme this weekend. And I was thinking about the actual knock-on effects of reindustrialization — most people don't want a car factory in their town. I actually think people don't really want change. They don't want things built. Data centers are probably at the bottom of the list. They're the least popular. But people don't want stuff built, generally. There are very few things that people are like, "Yeah, I'd be down for that to be built." People like the status quo. They're happy with things as they are. And they don't like change. People block home construction all the time. Also, permitting and expansion of existing homes. I'm not saying that they're as unpopular as data centers. Data centers are at the bottom. That means: Data center companies, not Michigan families, pay for their own energy and grid upgrades – so rates don't go up. Data centers can't harm our water, air, or environment. Data centers pay their fair share in taxes to fund our schools, roads, and communities. Data centers are built with local union labor.

I don't worry about the actual firmware stack. I would want every country to be using American chips so that the programmers there are held at bay by our technology. The Chinese are actually trying to develop this on their own. They are beating us in developing a larger electrical grid in China very quickly, because they don't have any permitting problems. And the other area that people have been talking about directly concerning these chips is they have much more compute power. They're building data centers at a rate that's four times ours. We have more data centers, but they're catching up very quickly.

A local utility company in Illinois has plans to help lower residents electrical bills They will be requiring new data centers and planned data centers to sign 10 year contracts saying they will be responsible for paying for upgrade costs and electricity usage costs “That means any new data centers would be on the hook for power upgrades and any energy they plan to use, even if the data center ends up not getting built or if they don't use as much power as planned or if they close.
