People can tolerate almost anything except being looked down on. Alain de Botton wrote a great book called Status Anxiety. In it, he explains how status can ease intense suffering. He says, "Provided it is not accompanied by humiliation, discomfort can be endured without complaint. Soldiers and explorers willingly...

This is where anger comes from: a situation of perceived status imbalance.

Journalist Cam Higby was in Minneapolis when Jake Lang got assaulted and nearly killed by ICE rioters He arrived right when it started to happen, here’s what he says took place: “I have been out in Minneapolis today on the ground. They slashed somebody's throat, the violent mob of protesters. Jake Lang -- was brutally attacked. They beat his head in. He almost definitely has a concussion or traumatic brain injury. He wasn't violent at all. He was surrounded by 3,000 people. The mob walked by a diner, saw a bunch of tech workers sitting down. Assumed that they were undercover federal agents, pulled them out of the diner, attacked them. Turns out one of them was actually an anti-ICE activist. They beat that guy's head in. I pulled up on the corner just as they were beating him up. And then a team of sheriff's deputies stepped in, pulled their less than lethal rifles, and threw the guy in the van. Probably took him to the hospital. He was stumbling around after he got back up. Almost definitely has a concussion or some kind of traumatic brain injury. -- Minneapolis Police Department has totally stood down. During this whole event where multiple people were almost killed, there was not a single MPD officer that I saw, and I was at most of these events. The sheriffs did step in in the City, which is surprising. Generally, the sheriff's office operates outside of city limits in Hennepin County, which is how most places operate. Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey should be held on trial immediately. There is no reason that violent mobs should be patrolling the streets of their city and their state trying to kill people, in some cases misidentified activists who agree with them because of their opinions.

If we brought back powdered wigs for elites, luxury beliefs would disappear overnight. Give people an obvious way to display their rank, and perhaps they would feel less need to signal it through their opinions. I’m only partly joking. In some elite circles, openly displaying wealth is considered vulgar. But the desire for status does not disappear just because certain ways of showing it become unacceptable. People find other ways to distinguish themselves. In The Status Game, Will Storr describes three broad forms of status competition. In dominance games, people gain status through force or intimidation. Street gangs and organized crime offer clear examples. In success games, people gain status by showing competence: earning a degree, building a career, or becoming skilled at something others value. In virtue games, people compete to be seen as morally good. This last form of competition helps explain the appeal of luxury beliefs. An unusual or fashionable opinion can make someone seem both distinctive and virtuous. But seeking status through beliefs does not always cause harm. People can also gain admiration by promoting ideas that improve other people’s lives. I’m often asked whether there are any good luxury beliefs. By my definition, the answer is no. Luxury beliefs are ideas and opinions that confer status on elites while inflicting costs on everyone else. If a belief raises the status of the person expressing it and also helps others, it is not a luxury belief. There have been historical examples of elites gaining status by advancing ideas that benefit society. The question is how to encourage more of that kind of competition.
