James Cameron is being sued after a resurfaced clip showed him discussing the use of a 14-year-old actress’s face for Neytiri without her consent. Actress Q'orianka Kilcher is suing James Cameron and the Walt Disney Company, alleging her facial features from a photograph taken when she was 14 years old were used without her consent to design the character Neytiri in the Avatar franchise. Her specific lower jaw, mouth shape, and facial structure were then used as the literal blueprints to build the CGI model for Neytiri. Instead of hiring Kilcher, he allegedly ordered his digital effects and design teams to "extract" her biometric facial features. Right after Avatar came out, Kilcher was invited to Cameron's production office. While Cameron wasn't there, she was left a signed sketch of Neytiri with a note from him reading, "Your beauty was my early inspiration for Neytiri. Too bad you were shooting another movie. Next time." The lawsuit was triggered when an interview clip of Cameron resurfaced online. In the video, Cameron points to an early Neytiri concept sketch and openly admits: "The actual source for this was a photo in the LA Times, a young actress named Q'orianka Kilcher. This is actually her… her lower face." Kilcher's legal team, led by attorney Arnold P. Peter, argues that using a minor's biometric data without compensation or consent crosses the line from creative inspiration into "digital identity theft."
