People say hostile architecture keeps spaces safe, clean, and usable. But here’s the issue: It doesn’t solve homelessness. It doesn’t address safety at the root. It just removes places to exist. Benches become harder to sit on. Spaces become harder to rest in. And the city becomes less usable....

National Park Service staff from across the country are working hard to make DC safe and beautiful, installing and repairing more than 1,000 benches this year. Their work may happen behind the scenes, but the results are on display every day in the shared spaces that help to tell our nation’s story. 🇺🇸

Yesterday, council unanimously approved my motion to improve and expand access to emergency day shelters and dedicated day shelter spaces for the winter of 2025–2026. What does this mean? It means that people experiencing homelessness will now have more places to go during the day to receive support and care. It means that more Edmontonians will enjoy safer communities. It means less pressure on workers in our libraries and public spaces. And it means that we’re building a stronger Edmonton, together, by supporting those who need it the most.
