Elon Musk in a new interview this morning on Tesla FSD: "In terms of having self-driving be ubiquitous, I think we’re making steady progress. The Tesla Full Self-Driving software, which is really just AI and cameras, we don’t use radars or LIDAR or anything like that. It’s really trying to drive the car in the same way that a human drives the car, primarily with vision and with a biological neural net. We take the same approach with our vehicles, which is a digital neural net and cameras. I expect this approach to ultimately be at least an order of magnitude safer than humans driving. It is quite magical because the car feels like it is sentient. It actually feels like it’s alive and you can actually, as we improve the software, feel the sentience growing in the car. We already have some vehicles operating with no people inside with no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be widespread in the US by the end of this year and hopefully in Israel too" Tesla FSD is beginning to feel more and more sentient with each update, it’s incredible. And honestly, it’s hard to explain this feeling to someone who hasn’t experienced the latest software yet. It’s freakin 2026... If your car isn’t electric and can’t take you from parking lot to parking lot by itself, it's like using a flip phone with a keyboard… or riding a horse in this era. That might sound dramatic, but once you see what’s actually happening behind the scenes, it starts to make sense. When I activate Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, the car is doing far more than simple cruise control that other car companies show off... it's really funny when I see them advertise it tbh. My Tesla is literally watching the world around it with eight cameras that give it a full 360° view. All that video feeds into the onboard AI computer inside the car, which is constantly analyzing everything around it like cars, lanes, pedestrians, traffic lights, construction zones, and making decisions in real time. Tesla has millions of cars on the road, and every single one is helping train the system. Even when people are driving manually, the AI is running quietly in the background predicting what it would do in that situation. And when something unusual happens, a weird intersection, a sudden obstacle, an unexpected move from another driver, that short clip gets sent back to Tesla’s data systems. Engineers then use those clips to train the next version of the driving AI. And that updated AI then gets pushed back to every Tesla through a software update. So literally overnight, your car wakes up smarter. This is what we call the Tesla’s AI flywheel. The more cars on the road, the more data the system learns from. FSD slams on the brakes for a cat in the road that doesn’t even exist. This is FSD 12.6.4 on HW3, which is a lot more sensitive to shadows & objects in the road with the 2026.8.6 update. There are many reports of brake stabbing. It brings me back to the days when I was testing with v10.3 of FSD back in 2021. It’s interesting that it’s the same FSD version as before, and not something like 12.6.4.1, but I guess Tesla can change the weights without changing the version. And they’ve likely been doing this for a while with 12.6.4. 😒

But this is EXTREMELY IRRESPONSIBLE, it’s called FSD (Supervised) for a reason because the driver needs to be able to take over in case of an emergency. Yes, the software is great, but it’s not fully ready for hands free and eyes off the road driving yet…

In Tesla’s latest safety data, FSD logged about 1 major collision every 5.3 million miles, which Tesla says is about 7x fewer major collisions than the U.S. average. On top of this, Tesla FSD delivers 7x fewer minor collisions and 5x fewer off-highway collisions than the average. It’s significantly safer than anything out there. This AI system is learning from millions of Teslas out in the real world, not from geofenced areas, like literally anywhere a Tesla can drive. Tesla’s vehicles use 360 degree camera visibility, over-the-air updates, and has a neural net that keeps making the system smarter, safer, and better over time, for all Teslas. The FSD experience is so good now that manually driving already feels like the distant past. And once you’ve lived with what so many Tesla owners get to experience every day, going back to any other car feels almost impossible.
