For years people acted like self-driving safety was all about perception — what kind of LIDAR, radar and cameras are you using? In the real world, we see that it is all about understanding. The issue here wasn’t whether LIDAR could see something or cameras could see something. It’s about just understanding the scene and doing the right thing. You could construct a self-driving car with a variety of different sensor suites that could handle this properly, but the key isn’t the sensor suite — it’s the deep learning, the understanding that gives you safety. The sensor suite needs to be sufficient to see, sure. But it really doesn’t take much to beat what a human can see. They only look in one direction and are frequently distracted.
