Pete Crow Armstrong is called out after coming off second after stealing attempt on ball four to the hitter. Many may not know is that even though it was ball four, the ball is still live Dumb or correct rule?

It's both dumb and correct, but it is the rule none-the-less. It would be the same if he simply walked to second base, touched the bag, then stepped off the bag. He would be out if he was tagged. That's exactly what happened here.

Its up to the runner to realize what the situation is and be aware. If ball 4 was a wild pitch the runner could advance all the way to 3rd if he could get there in time. Once you take possession of a base, any free pass or award has been fulfilled. Its on you after that.

Absolutely shocked by the amount of people who thought ball 4 means dead ball

Good rule. Ball is live and he can try to take third. So of course if he comes off second he can also be tagged out.

Please explain how you could change it. Allow the runner to run past the base after a walk? How far? Can he go to third? Why not? The rule is fine it is the fans who are clueless. Much lower IQs

Good rule. Basic baseball. If you’ve off the bag during a live ball and get tagged, you’re out. A stupid rule would be a specific amendment to the rule for a specific scenario of “unless it’s ball four, the ball is dead only if a player is stealing”

If the tag wasn't applied before he reached the base I would agree with the call, but he wasn't given a clear path to 2nd and that's why he came off the bag. The ump also never signaled safe or out. If anything, this situation should probably be clearly outlined in the rules.

PCA got to second base. He wasn't "obstructed" from reaching second base because he did, in fact, get to second base. Then he left second base. Then he was tagged out. The inability of a large number of people to follow a simple logical sequence of events is astounding.

So if he would have stopped and walked the rest of the way he would have been safe? Then why didn’t the ump signal walk?

Correct call. All day.

Dumb rule, but also a dumb attempt.

It rarely happens - so I was taken aback when he was out last night - but was then reminded of the rule

Correct rule. That’s baseball part of the whole that makes it an awesome game.

Correct rule because he does not have to stop at 2nd base. He can further advance. People not understanding this are willfully ignorant.

He was hindered from reaching the base. Is that okay?

Dumb rule. Once it's called ball four, it should be a dead ball and forced runners are allowed to advance to the next base unihibitted.

Sounds right to me. He's entitled to second base but he went off the base.

Stupid, but correct. In this day and age of ABS challenges, base runners need to be especially cognizant of what they're doing. I don't think ball four can automatically mean "dead ball" anymore because what if it's challenged and changed to a strike?

Black and white.. it’s the correct call. I don’t think it was the purpose or intention of that rule and it should be enforced the same as running through first base. Unless in the umpires opinion you’re making a legit move to advance you’re not out.

The ruling was correct. It’s also a dumb rule because the umpire isn’t screaming ball four for PCA to know that he can adjust his slide

In this video, the umpire didn’t make a call. It was ball four. So how did they review a call that was never made? They overturned the call.

Dumb. Ball four on a caught ball should make play dead imo

Not a dumb rule - poor base running Reached the bad entitled to and then left the bag while in contact with tag

Correct call. Rule needs adjusting in the modern world of instant replay as the leaving the base after touching it is intended for those planning to advance. He slid on a ball 4 advance and came off the bag after touching it.

Since its PCA it’s allowable

The rule is fine but the problem that no one sees is that the infielder (Bichette) is guilty of infielder interference. With the pitch being ball 4 and the runner entitled to 2nd base he obstructed 2nd base from Pete.

Does base stealer get credit for a stolen base when he beats the throw but then he over slides the bag?

Correct rule. If he had jogged to first base, stepped on it, and then started to take a lead before the pitcher stepped on the rubber, he can be tagged out. I don’t understand the hoopla here.

Correct ruling. Once you touch second base, you can be tagged out if you lose connection with it.

I think ball 4 should get you the base automatically….if he made an attempt to advance to the next base, like an overthrow at first, then he is in jeopardy…but that didn’t happen…

Bad rule. Ball four runner should automatically get 2B if he was on 1B. Catcher’s fault for throwing the damn thing, not the runner’s.

First time I've ever seen this called in 50 years of watching MLB.

Stupid, counter intuitive, insane.

100% correct

That's stupid as fuck

Can he try for 3rd after reaching 2nd on ball 4? Of course, ball’s not dead. If he wanders off base after getting there on ball 4, can he be tagged out? Of course. This was correct call, it’s his responsibility to know if he tags 2nd then comes off the bag, he can be tagged out.
