This is the kind of play that eye testers have a hard time with, but also shows why catch probability is so useful. This ball had just a 55% catch probability, and is just made to look so easy by Ceddanne Rafaela. It's all about what you don't see on the screen, because it happens before the camera is on the play. The jump is 9.0 feet above average. He was positioned well into right-center. Lesser outfielders win catch on the week on this one with a full extension dive.

I've had some replies that this Pete Crow-Armstrong catch IS actually a routine play, so here is a VERY similar play: The CF has the exact same distance to cover, and .2 of a second longer to get there. The CF (Carroll) was faster on the play, by about a foot per second. It's a double:

Get your "glazing Pete Crow-Armstrong" pitchforks out, because here's another one! And he actually caught it this time... Just a 20% catch probability, but he makes it look so easy. Most MLB outfielders aren't catching this at all, and certainly not with a casual slide. Why? Per usual for him, the jump and route efficiency. +8.3 feet above average (43 feet total, another top 10 of these), and a 97.3% route efficiency.

Most can't get there. Langford's jump is elite, +8.7 feet above the average outfielder. The jump is so good he doesn't even have to get up to top speed. This is just a routine double into the gap much of the time, and the TV viewer thinks nothing of it:

Absurd catch yesterday by Jacob Young of the Nationals. Just 2% catch probability on this one from Statcast (rounds up to 5%). Why doesn't it look that hard for Young? His jump was one of the best of the year, over 12 feet above average.

Forget everything what it says. It is all BS. Just check out the thumb of his right hand. Nobody can tell me that this is not weird. This guy is clearly not in control of his extremities. I made a cutout of the video and increased speed. Parkinson much?

Some people are tired of PCA highlights, but he just keeps making plays. Just 35% on this ball last night. The jump and speed are so good he's able to make a casual catch in front of the wall instead of slamming into it. +8 OAA and +9 DRS in 30 games.

I just noticed that Andy Pages has a new "best catch of the year" according to catch probability, and it's a great example of how watching the advanced stats can tell you things you won't get from watching on TV. This was the last play of the game last Wednesday. Bogaerts hit the ball 102.3 MPH at a 15° launch angle, and Pages covered 45 feet in 2.9 seconds and did it so efficiently he didn't even have to leave his feet. Statcast has it at just a 5% catch probability.

I really want Noelvi Marte to be good in CF, but this was pretty rough. Took a step in. Then kind of never sprinted. His average sprint speed is 29 feet/per second. On this play, it was just 26.8. MLB had it as an 80% catch probability for him.

Mike Krukow on Jung Hoo Lee’s catch against the Dodgers last night: “That first inning was starting to get away from Adrian Houser. When Will Smith comes up in the first inning and hits this ball, I’m thinking 'This is not good' because if it gets over the head of Jung Hoo Lee, that’s 3 runs. They’re all gonna score in our opinion. JHL makes this great play. He backs up against the wall, comes up and gets the ball so quickly back into the infield that the runners at first and second can’t advance. That inning could have completely blown up. Houser got some confidence in that. He gets out of the inning and goes in the next inning and strikes out the side. It was huge to not only calm that inning, but to give Houser some confidence. As it turns out, Houser pitches into the 6th inning and he gets his first win ever against the Dodgers.” Game changing catch for sure via: KNBR | Brian Murphy
