Van Hollen: Now, we know the state of our Union. We know it is under attack from a lawless president who is shredding our Constitution and attacking our democracy. A president whose private ICE army kills Americans and then calls the victims “domestic terrorists.” That is what Donald Trump and his administration said. We are here because we know our country is being robbed by the most corrupt president in American history — one who is exploiting the Oval Office to enrich himself, his family, and his billionaire buddies. A president who continues to hide portions of the Epstein files from both survivors and the American people. When are they going to release the files? A president who wants to erase our history. Are we going to let him erase America’s history? A president who promised that on day one he would bring down costs — but ever since he was sworn in, prices have gone up on the American people, even as he refuses to extend tax cuts and tax credits that help families afford their health care. We have a president who seeks not to build a more perfect union, but to tear it down. A president who said he would stop wars — but instead is responsible for war crimes and, as we speak, is threatening more wars. We are gathered here because we know we cannot pretend that any of this is normal. We will not — and must not — pretend this is business as usual. We must get in the way of Donald Trump’s march toward fascism. We cannot let our country go down that road. What Donald Trump wants to do is what all bullies do — what all dictators do. He wants to intimidate us. He wants us to sit obediently and quietly while he lies and lies and lies to the American people.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., said Black Americans are “outraged at what is happening now with these efforts to do away with the African American museum and all of the Smithsonian,” during a House Oversight subcommittee hearing Tuesday. “If you erase it, we will replace it,” Mfume said. “It’s that damn simple.” In his comments, Mfume quoted former President Abraham Lincoln and said “history taught us and still teaches us that we can't keep making the same mistakes.” Mfume said he sat at the hearing “as a Black man who grew up in segregation, who wasn't allowed to go certain places, who drank from a water fountain that said colored, who found his mother and his father unable to do anything other than basic day work.” “We will not let you destroy that museum. No matter how long it takes, how many battles are required, how much effort is needed, we will not allow that to happen,” Mfume said. “Unless you find a way to kill all of us and walk over our bodies to change history.” The hearing focused on the way the Smithsonian Institution presents scholarship on U.S. history. In announcing the hearing, the Republican-led committee claimed that the “Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is promoting a narrow, politically tendentious agenda instead of seeking to instill in visitors an appreciation for America’s unique history as a beacon of liberty, democracy, and opportunity.” In President Donald Trump’s second term, his administration has sought to clamp down on how American history is framed in public spaces, removing exhibits from national parks on slavery and violence against Native Americans.

Former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levy: ‘J.D. Vance’s anti-Israel comments are a SEA CHANGE in American politics, it’s GAME ON against the Israel lobby.’ ‘The fascinating thing for me is that J.D. Vance has clearly made a political calculation. He sees political advantage in a Republican political setting in taking these positions vis-a-vis Israel… I don’t believe that for one moment. I believe that J.D. Vance is making a political calculation, that this will help him. And that to me is an absolute sea change in American politics. Almost irrespective of whether it comes off or not. The fact that a leading Republican contender for the Presidency has said, this is how I’m going to approach trying to get the nomination. This is going to be one of the building blocks for my candidacy tells us so much about the shift in the American political scene when it comes to Israel. We know, and that’s happening on the Republican MAGA side. We know, on the Democrat side that there is this contestation between those who say, listen to our voters, listen to why Kamala Harris lost, why people weren’t mobilised, enthused. One of those reasons was our appalling position on Gaza. We have to do better, we have to change. And there are others who are saying, yeah, but we’re not actually going to change. Can we just pretend that we care and get on with policy as usual? All this is going to play out. What I’m saying is we are in unprecedented terrain when it comes to Israel in the American political debate. And at the same time, do not underestimate the capacity that the lobby still has to try and sway things in its favour. Whether that’s independent campaign expenditure, given how money can play a role in American politics, given. Given whether that is how deeply embedded in Israeli narratives American media and politics is. There’s so much that they still have going for them, but it is game on, no doubt about it.’ —Former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levy on the latest episode of Going Underground Watch the full interview in the quoted post below👇
