Tobi: If you don't read books, you live a lifetime. If you read books, you live a thousand, right? David: I'm going to interrupt you real quick because I took notes on this podcast six years ago. This is the first time I came across you and you said something that I absolutely love, and I had in my notebook, and I went to find when I took it. It was 2020, and you said, "Books are the closest thing you ever come to finding cheat codes for real life. You can access the entire learnings of someone else's career in a few hours." Tobi: It tracks, doesn't it? David: I dedicate my life to this, so of course, I'm going to agree with that. Tobi: Absolutely. I really think we need to shout this more from the rooftops, right? The one weird trick seems to be just read books.

Palmer Luckey: “I read thousands of books before I was 13” Asked about his experience of being homeschooled as a child, Oculus and Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey replies: “I was really lucky . . . there were [a lot] of things where I was interested for my own reasons and very good at self-directed learning. I read thousands of books before I was 13. Literally thousands of books.” What kinds of books? “Everything,” Palmer replies. “The classics, science fiction, The Art of the Deal — the entire gamut of everything that you would want. I was checking out lots of books from the library. Also lots of people gave me books. Everyone knew that Palmer liked to read so people would sometimes buy me new books but more often adult friends would just dump massive quantities of books.” Palmer’s mom was also on Barnes & Noble’s registry for teachers: “She had the educator’s discount for buying stuff from Barnes & Noble. 🍒 "I'm detoxing for my dopamine." Dopamine detox by reading. I need to bring my brain back from being addicted to pain and joy. Our brains are in pain these days. (It's been) one day. I need to cut down. I try, but it's hard... I try not to, but I find myself watching short videos. I read some books at the end of December, though—about four books. There's a Korean novel called Rapids. It's a romantic novel, and I really enjoyed reading it. What else did I read? Let's see! Oh, I read a comic book too. There's a comic book called DVD. I think I read it when I was in middle school. Or was it elementary school? Middle school? It was written by the author Chon Kye-young. A scene I like from it! Here is a book you must read: Demian by Hermann Hesse. It’s only 150 pages, yet of the most profound books I’ve ever read. I first read it at 22. I liked it but didn’t fully understand it. I read it again at 50 and it hit like a freight train. Written just after World War I, it’s about the terrifying necessity of becoming who you actually are. The protagonist Emil Sinclair grows up in a safe, bright, comfortable family, but there’s a darker world outside that keeps pulling at him. Hesse explores what he calls the Abraxas: the positive and the negative forces inside every human being. Not just the version of yourself that was handed to you by your upbringing and your rules, but the whole truth of what lives underneath. Robert Greene who wrote The 48 Laws of Power and who I deeply admire, said Demian was a major influence on him. Because Demian scrapes off the veneer and looks honestly at greed, envy, mendacity, the primordial parts of human nature that polite society pretends don’t exist. You can read it in an afternoon, but it will stay with you for decades.
