🇹🇼 At least 51 people have been injured in Taiwan as Typhoon Fung-Wong sweeps across the island. Authorities evacuated more than 8,300 residents from coastal and mountain areas and closed schools as the tropical storm reached Taiwan’s southern regions. Earlier, Fung-Wong hit the Philippines as a super typhoon, causing floods, landslides, and killing at least 27 people. The storm has since weakened but continues to bring heavy rain and flooding. Definitely getting concerned about the storm surge threat in Baler Bay. Huge waves from Typhoon Fung-wong (UwanPH) are already crashing into the Aurora coastline of Luzon, and if the storm makes landfall just south of the bay, it could push a dangerous flow of seawater directly into Baler. Widespread reports are also indicating that substantial freshwater flash flooding is ongoing in multiple locations. Conditions across the northern Philippines will only continue to get worse from here on out.

What an intimidating sight Fung-wong (UwanPH) has become over the Philippine Sea as her winds creep up to 65 mph (100 kph). The sprawling size of this budding West Pacific beast is creating an interesting dichotomy. On the one hand, it’s causing Fung-wong to take longer to organize and thus delaying a potential round of rapid intensification (limiting how strong she can get before striking Luzon). But, on the other hand, her larger radius will affect more people in the Philippines and possibly generate a greater storm surge risk near the location of landfall. Even in this latter scenario, which seems to be increasingly more likely, Fung-wong could still explode to a high-end Category 4 Typhoon. Either way, it’s a serious situation we have developing here tonight.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku’s 185 MPH peak strength a few hours ago was very close to her Maximum Potential Intensity. In other words, Sinlaku generated the highest possible sustained wind speeds that a storm could theoretically produce over these specific water temperatures and atmospheric conditions in the West Pacific. Historically speaking, this is extremely rare, and similar to what we saw with Hurricane Melissa last year in the Caribbean Sea.

Super Typhoon Ragasa (NandoPH) has left the Babuyan Islands of the Philippines in darkness. Now, after finally weakening just below Category 5 intensity, this monstrous storm’s convection is suddenly re-freezing around his still-perfect, ~925 MBAR stadium eye over the South China Sea. With favorable conditions ahead, Ragasa could weaken very gradually and remain a major Typhoon by the time he makes landfall in southern China. However, the track will be important. The further south Ragasa trends, the more strength he’ll lose due to land interaction.

The eye of Fung-wong (UwanPH) is really starting to melt through the icy shell of her CDO now. New, towering thunderstorms are rising up within the inner eyewall as well. On microwave imagery, the Typhoon’s cumbersome core structure is still yet to fully solidify. What we could see in the coming hours, especially after the Pacific sun evanesces below the horizon, is for this new burst of core thunderstorms to freeze the eyewall into a more complete and circular ring around the eye. That would likely jumpstart a true phase of rapid intensification right as Fung-wong enters her final approach to Luzon in the Philippines.

Hurricane Melissa has shattered the global record for the DRIEST storm eye ever observed, surpassing Super Typhoon Meranti (2016). The NHC is now warning that the eyewall’s destructive winds may cause “total structural failure, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread infrastructural damage, prolonged power and communications outages, and isolated communities” in Jamaica. The immense detonations of lightning throughout Melissa’s 175 MPH eyewall indicate that intensification is STILL somehow ongoing. Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH) is back to Category 2 strength ahead of schedule and looks to be developing a tight inner core that’s fully ensconced in ice-cold convection. This brings to the table the possibility of a Category 3-4 landfall in Vietnam, IF these trends continue. Something that could halt Kalmaegi’s re-strengthening bid is the fact that he’s about to track over more marginal sea surface temperatures, though they are still likely warm enough to support a major Typhoon.

This powerful storm packed winds gusts of over 50 mph and it’s a true testament that we are no longer in a pattern that brings rain in just winter time but is now extending into April and May and beyond with that said we have another storm on the heels that will be arriving very quickly on April 21 - 27, 2026. The next storm will also bring more heavy rain, thunder, and lightning, and yes, more snowfall to the local mountains. As the Pacific continues to warm, the weather will become more drastic with extreme heat waves and more unusual severe rain events for California. This situation will get quite scary if it continues to verify by the end of October and November with the super El Niño development and the atmosphere connecting something that we’ve not seen since 1982, 1997/ 1998. The main Marshall Islands low axis is already gearing up for this major event this year which you’ve seen an example already. The flooding in the Hawaiian islands. As Spain battles deadly floods, and millions of people are devastated across the Phillipines and Taiwan by a record typhoon -- the G20 United States Health Ministers' declaration on #ClimateChange and health could not be more relevant. Strong #ClimateAction with health at the centre must be taken seriously, and funded appropriately. We especially welcome the ministers’ commitment to facilitate collaboration through the World Health Organization (WHO)-led Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health, which now has 90 members, with Switzerland and Portugal announcing their participation at the #G20 meeting.

I hope more people are starting to see what's happening. Whenever people find a candidate to take on the corrupt system, the system protects itself by either co-opting the candidate or pouring in millions of dollars from AIPAC and/or billionaires to crush their campaign. It happened with Bernie and Massie, and it will happen to the next candidate the people put their time, energy, and hope into too. The only thing that can save us is each other. We the people must cast aside the divide-and-conquer politics of our corporate rulers and rise up together to fight for a better system that puts people over profits.

JUST IN: An Extreme Wind Warning has been issued for the Pacific island of Rota as the 180 MPH (285 kph) eyewall of Category 5 Super Typhoon Bavi closes in. The NWS is warning that venturing outside can result in DEATH from flying projectiles. Unreinforced structures will be destroyed, power poles will be snapped or toppled, and island-wide vegetation may be obliterated. If you are on Rota, take cover NOW in a reinforced interior room away from windows. Use mattresses, blankets, or pillows to cover your head and body.
