This darn storm man... back for more intensification now over the waters between Jamaica and Cuba. The eye has rapidly reformed this evening, with significant lightning in the western side -- that is indicative of fast intensifying hurricanes. Santiago de Cuba is Cuba's 2nd most populated city and could take hurricane conditions overnight. Only three major hurricanes have ever tracked across eastern Cuba in history: Matthew (2016), Ike (2008), Dennis (2005) Melissa will become the fourth overnight into Wednesday morning. Should be a pretty solid storm surge into Guantanamo Bay even away from the eye.

A bridge in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica was swallowed by a swollen river on Tuesday as the eye of Hurricane Melissa closed in on the western coast of the country. According to See Jamaica, the channel that live streamed this footage, the bridge is a "vital link between Spanish Town and Linstead." Hurricane Melissa has since made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. It is the most powerful hurricane to lash the island since record-keeping began 174 years ago and one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded.

Almost all Major Hurricanes undergo an eyewall replacement cycle. Melissa never did. She sustained CATEGORY 5 status for 35 consecutive hours, the 8TH longest total duration of Cat 5 winds ever documented in an Atlantic Hurricane, and the longest since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Instead of initiating replacement cycles, Melissa underwent eyewall mergers, which caused only short-lived pauses in her intensification and allowed her to incrementally climb to an extreme strength as she slowly writhed towards Jamaica. It is exceptionally rare to see a high-level Hurricane eye remain so perfectly circular and clear for so many days on end.

Hurricane Polo is rapidly intensifying, and the storm has now strengthened into a borderline Category 3 hurricane, with further intensification into Category 5 strength expected by tomorrow evening. This hurricane could look dramatically different just 24 hours from now. If current trends continue, we could be looking at the strongest hurricane of the season!

JUST IN: An Extreme Wind Warning has been issued for the Pacific island of Rota as the 180 MPH (285 kph) eyewall of Category 5 Super Typhoon Bavi closes in. The NWS is warning that venturing outside can result in DEATH from flying projectiles. Unreinforced structures will be destroyed, power poles will be snapped or toppled, and island-wide vegetation may be obliterated. If you are on Rota, take cover NOW in a reinforced interior room away from windows. Use mattresses, blankets, or pillows to cover your head and body.

What we’re seeing right now could be historic. If Hurricane Humberto is upgraded to a CATEGORY 5, it would mark two consecutive years with multiple Cat 5s in the Atlantic. That hasn’t happened since the Great Depression. Every satellite frame is more intense than the last. The 145 MPH eyewall is only getting more deeply submerged in a whirling ice bath of convection.

Our Storm is entering BOMB GENESIS MODE and is now rapidly strengthening. 💨 Conditions about to head downhill in a HURRY as Winds begin to CRANK close to Hurricane Force this evening , especially near the Carolina coastline. ⏬ Over the next 24 hours, this Storm is expected to drop 35 millibars in pressure, rivaling the rate of intensification seen in some of the MOST EXTREME Hurricanes in recent years. 🌀 At peak intensity, pressure could fall as low as 967 mb, territory normally reserved for a Category 3 Hurricane. 🌬️ That kind of pressure drop will drive WIND GUSTS up to 70 mph on land, particularly along the Carolina coast. Pacific Hurricane Polo has just been upgraded to CATEGORY 5 intensity after undergoing one of the most extreme rapid intensification phases ever recorded on planet Earth. In just 24 HOURS, his winds have increased by 110 MPH, and his pressure has detonated by 75 MBAR. This essentially matches Hurricane Otis’ unprecedented intensification rate (over almost the exact same waters near Acapulco) back in 2023. As of now, Polo is not forecast to make landfall in Mexico.

In 24 hours, her winds have more than DOUBLED, from 70 mph to 145 MPH, and her core pressure has plunged from 998 mbar to 935 MBAR. This is an exceptionally rapid rate of deepening for an open Atlantic Hurricane. Erin’s pressure continues to plummet by 6-8 mbar per hour based on Hurricane Hunter recon data, and she is now knocking on the door of Category 5 status.

The Philippines can’t catch a break in the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH), because just as that system heads deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, a new leviathan has emerged from the depths of the Pacific. On the right side of this satellite loop is Tropical Storm Fung-wong, a sprawling embryonic cyclone in the Philippine Sea. She may be weak and disorganized now, but the environment ahead is going to be favorable for rapid intensification. The island of Luzon is her most likely target for landfall. Watch this one closely.

Her sustained winds are now at 130 MPH (210 kph), and the sea-level pressure in her giant eye has fallen to 943 mbar, making her a CATEGORY 4 storm. This will be the strongest Typhoon to hit the Philippines since Man-yi (Pepito) in November of last year, and is coming just 5 days after Kalmaegi (Tino) ravaged Cebu Island.
