Ever hear Albert Einstein’s voice? He’s him explaining his formula, E=mc² It is probably the most famous formula in the world, but what exactly does it mean? Let's start by defining each letter in the formula: E = Energy M = Mass C = Speed of light (a very large number) If we were to read the formula, we would say, "Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared." The formula itself is rather simple in that it essentially says that energy and mass are different forms of the same thing; they are interchangeable. So are you saying a beam of light and a banana are different forms of the same thing? Yes, in our head, this may not make sense, but it does in nature. This discovery was groundbreaking at the time because people had previously believed that energy could only be created by kinetic or potential energy. You can increase kinetic energy by accelerating your car. You can increase potential energy by stretching a rubber band. Einstein demonstrated that there was a third form, which is that things have energy because they simply exist. Ok, so why is mass multiplied by the speed of light? Whenever you are converting mass to pure energy, it is by nature moving at the speed of light. Pure energy is an electromagnetic radiation, which travels at 186,000 miles/sec (300,000 km/sec). Ok, cool, but why is the speed of light squared? This again has to do with the nature of energy. If an object is moving twice as fast as another object, it does not have twice as much energy. Rather, it has four times as much energy. Hence, the speed of light is squared, which comes out to a very big number. C^2 is the conversion factor from mass to energy. The bottom line is that even small objects have an immense amount of energy. Through the process of nuclear fusion/fission via nuclear power plants, we can harness some of this energy. In the atomic bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima, there was about 700 milligrams (equivalent to the weight of 1/3 of a dime) of uranium which was converted to energy that destroyed everything within a 1-mile (1.6 km) blast radius.

Warmup to Statistical Mechanics What Exactly is a Hamiltonian A System? In ordinary Mechanics, you might begin with position and velocity. Hamiltonian Mechanics rewrites the same motion in a different language. Instead of position and velocity, it uses position and momentum. We write the position variables as q and the momentum variables as p. Then the full state of the system at one instant is (q, p) That pair is one point in phase space. Why do we do this? Because in these variables, the equations of motion take a remarkably clean form. Everything is generated by one single function, the Hamiltonian H(q, p) and in the simplest cases this Hamiltonian is just the total energy written in terms of position and momentum. So if you know H, you know the dynamics. You might wonder, but how can one function generate motion? The rule is dqᵢ/dt = ∂H/∂pᵢ dpᵢ/dt = −∂H/∂qᵢ These are Hamilton’s equations. Now read them slowly 😄 The rate of change of position comes from differentiating H with respect to momentum. The rate of change of momentum comes from differentiating H with respect to position, with a minus sign. This constitutes the whole engine. A simple example makes this less abstract: Take one particle of mass m moving in a potential V(q). Then the Hamiltonian is H(q, p) = p²/(2m) + V(q) The first term is kinetic energy. The second term is potential energy. Now apply Hamilton’s equations. First, dq/dt = ∂H/∂p = p/m So momentum tells you how position changes. Second, dp/dt = −∂H/∂q = −dV/dq Thus, momentum changes because of force. If you now combine these two equations, you recover ordinary Newtonian mechanics. Since p = m dq/dt, we get m d²q/dt² = −dV/dq So, Hamiltonian mechanics is not a different theory. It is the same mechanics, written in a form that exposes its geometric structure much more clearly. A common misconception in physics is that gravity must be negligible at the quantum scale because its measured strength appears weak compared to electromagnetism and the strong nuclear force. However, this perception arises from considering gravity only in its weak field limit. Obviously, it will appear weak under such conditions, but the situation changes when we consider regions of high mass-energy density. For example, when examining strong gravitational fields near black holes, the force becomes immensely powerful. With this in mind, lets re-examine unification and gravity at the quantum scale: Following our holographic mass solution, elementary particles like protons are found to be microscopic Schwarzschild black holes and their mass-energy density is sufficient to create a gravitational curvature equivalent to the strong nuclear force. The vacuum energy density of space provides enough energy to maintain these structures through Planck-scale dynamics, preventing their rapid evaporation via Hawking radiation, so they are ultra-stable.
