The metaphor is powerful. But the “pike effect” story is much stronger as a lesson than as established science. What is well supported is learned helplessness: after repeated failure or uncontrollable stress, animals and humans can stop trying even when conditions change. That idea has decades of research behind it. So the deeper truth is not really about one fish. It is about what repeated defeat can do to a mind: it can leave the wall in place even after the glass is gone. And that is why healing matters. Not just motivation, but new experiences strong enough to teach the nervous system that the barrier is no longer there

Interesting also how this can be used to create a false narrative (where the glass has not been removed but those in charge to tell everyone tell it has)

Haven't heard it called the pike effect, but in cognitive psychology it's also called 'learned helplessness'. It's how they simulate the effects of depression in animals for research purposes.

I think there was only one bit in this entire video where the fish actually looked like it could be a pike (around the 27s mark). I've fished hundreds of pike in my day; they look nothing like 99% of this video

Poor Pike!😖

@MSanchezWorld Most likely the like injured its mouth to feed

This experiment says a lot about human psychology

I mean technically the pike couldn’t get thru the glass , it was only till some nut job removed the glass. He probably lost his capacity due to so many hits he was injured.

Horrible, the pike knocked itself blind

What if it needs more clarification 🤔?

@TranslateMom türkçe

Very wise statement

The little fishes had greater purpose in life God only used the scientists to protect them.

Now subtitled in o‘zbek ⬇

Ummm...we don't have fish brains.

Horrible. Show of cruelty to animal.

Then how many fish were used to confirm the theory and what did the scientists do with the results?

Powerful! 💪🏾😎👌🏾

no brother, just comes to show that understanding of the physical world is priceless.

Olp

Was this replicated?
