🌱 🧬 Plant (genetic) engineering lags ~15 years behind other organisms... While the first genetic circuits were built in bacteria in the year 2000, and mammalian circuits followed a couple of years after, it was only until the late 2010s that similar genetic engineering efforts started in plants. However,... plants account for 80% of all biomass on Earth, they are our carbon capture machines by excellence, the original source of most pharmaceuticals in the world, and the basis of all of agriculture. When engineered, they can serve as low-cost, natural bioreactors for pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredients, for textiles and functional food… they can fix more carbon from the air and produce more food and, in some weird cases, they can even be turned into digital data storage devices and metal mining machines. The following is a 20-min Biopunk Tour of the Brophy Lab in Stanford Synthetic Biology, where they are building new genetic engineering tools for plants and their associated microbes, towards a sustainable future. Their PI, Jennifer Brophy, famously built the first logic gates in plants during her postdoc, setting a precedent for the Brophytes 🌱. PhD student Vivian Zhong and Postdoc Alexander Borowsky were kind enough to answer lots of questions about their current work, challenges and opportunities in industrial plant genetic engineering, under- and over-hyped plant biotechnologies, and societal challenges of engineered plants. The University of Nebraska debunks the manipulation behind cow farts/burps and methane: “They have not accounted for the capture part, they only account for methane being released. Carbon capture in soil and grass - helped out by cow grazing and manure - can far outweigh the emissions from cattle. Grasslands can take up more CO2 and carbon in the soil and plants, that offsets the CO2 that cattle are producing but it also offsets the methane.”

Nice hack for those that have a big $FARM that reduces your planting and harvesting time by around 80%. Instead of running around in circles and fat fingering the different plants, it's best if you plant all plants of one kind in one lane. Then, you can click below or above your character and it harvests and plants while it walks twice a second. In fact, the most efficient farm is not a square one, it would be a very elongated, rectangular one that has 19 lanes each 50 tiles long for the 19 different plants, so that you can plant and harvest all 50 of them within 30 seconds instead of within several minutes.

This video shows real-time carbon flows inside a mycorrhizal network. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with ~ 90% of terrestrial plants and have done so for 400 million years. These specialized fungi provide plants with nutrients and water in exchange for carbon-based exudates the plant produces through photosynthesis. Current estimates say that between 4 and 20 percent of all CO2 pulled in by plants ends up stored in mycorrhizal tissues. Considering plants need to build an entire above-ground structure, a root system, and produce flowers, fruits, and seeds, this is an astounding amount of carbon to allocate to mycorrhizal biomass. A recent review study estimates that global plant communities transfer 13.1 gigatons of CO2 to the underground mycelium of mycorrhizal fungi each year – equivalent to roughly 1/3 of annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. The amount of time the carbon is locked up in fungi’s mycelium remains unknown. Nonetheless, the influx of such a massive amount of carbon into the soil is a boon for soil ecology, nutrient cycling, and the health of water cycles. Day 144, orbit 2233 — Many of you noticed the pink glow in the recent timelapses done in Columbus… That’s thanks to Veggie 🌱, the International Space Station’s vegetable production system — our little space garden! The Veggie chamber glows magenta-pink because it emits a light spectrum that’s perfect for plant growth! During Expedition 74, Veggie hosted the Veg-06 experiment, with two main goals: to study how alfalfa plants and beneficial bacteria work together in microgravity to capture nitrogen from the air and turn it into nutrients plants can use… and to look at how lignin – the material that helps plants stand upright on Earth – changes in space. The alfafa plants 🌿 were successfully grown – watered and nurtured by all of us – then harvested (aerial parts and roots) and stowed in a freezer. They were sent back to Earth for further analysis on board the CRS SpX‑34 cargo Dragon. For us, working on Veggie is a real taste of home – a reminder of what a garden looks and smells like. There’s something very special about watching the plants grow and caring for them day after day. I loved working on this experiment 💚 It is clear that being able to grow fresh food 🌶 in space will be crucial for long exploration missions, not just for nutrition, but for crew morale as well. A better understanding of nitrogen fixation is also key to improving soil quality on Earth, while studying lignin may benefit agriculture and forestry in the long run. John toured NIO's factory in China. They built an upscale EV for under $10k and went from the first shovel in the ground to the first car off the line in just 17 months. He said China knew it would always be behind in ICE cars, so it pushed aggressively into EVs to leapfrog to the next technology and gain an advantage over the rest of the world. "Going to their factory and seeing, number one, how quickly that factory is built. And second, the factory automation -- much of the process was done via robotics. Looking at the auto plants we have in the US, we still have a plant that was originally built a 100 years ago, operating outside of Chicago. The average age of a US plant is roughly 40 years now. They've been upgraded over time but I don't think they replicate what's happening with robotics in China. This combination of being able to do things really quickly with a skilled but low-cost labor force and robotics has just allowed China to create a quality product at a price that nobody in the rest of the world's really been able to figure out yet."
