🚨Uncanny Expeditions: Spotted the Secretive Aircraft Used in the Maduro Raid "Beast of Kandahar" I was reading the comments on the video (link below) and this caught my attention, posted by a retired aerospace engineer: "The RQ 170 uses plasma flow control to improve its aerodynamic efficiency. High voltage electrodes along the leading edges ionize the boundary layer, creating a thin layer of energized air that keeps airflow attached longer, delays separation, and reduces drag, allowing the aircraft to fly farther and more efficiently. This technology, known as active flow control or plasma actuators, is a subtle but powerful way to enhance performance and stealth. The RQ 170 has no mid air refueling capability and was first integrated with two specially modified B 2s for long range testing and operational development. An enhanced version is on the RQ 180, now I did not work on the Raider program so I can not be 100% positive however I am confident that a highly refined and advanced version is now on the B 21. This technology is likely (one, there are many) of the major factors that allowed the B 21 to reduce its engines from four power plants to just two while still meeting performance requirements. Even tho the Raider has mid air refueling capability the AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory) likes options and the MQ-25 Stingray is not ready yet." Source:

As the aircraft accelerates, its floats or hull start to glide across the water instead of pushing through it. This lighter movement cuts drag and helps the plane rise onto the step, a flatter and faster position that lets it build the airspeed it needs. From there, the water acts like a smooth runway until aerodynamic lift takes over and the seaplane climbs into the sky.

Taming the Edge: How lithium could help us control #fusion plasmas. This video captures the first flashes of lithium being injected into the #plasma of our ST40 tokamak, marking the start of our exploration into its effects. Why lithium? In fusion research, we aim for H-mode, a high-performance state with improved plasma confinement. Future fusion power plants are expected to operate in this mode. But H-mode brings a challenge: ELMs (Edge Localised Modes) are bursts of energy at the plasma edge, similar to mini solar flares. These can reduce plasma temperature and damage the divertor with intense heat and particles. Pioneering work by PPPL and others has shown that lithium can suppress ELMs and increase energy confinement time, leading to higher temperatures. On ST40, we’re currently injecting lithium powder during plasma shots to explore its effects. As part of our upcoming ST40 LEAPS upgrade – in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero – we’ll go further, coating plasma-facing components with solid lithium using the ‘lithium evaporation’ technique. We’ll be experimentally testing several mechanisms. One key focus is how lithium absorbs hydrogen isotopes and reduces their recycling back into the plasma, lowering the density at the plasma edge, leading to a more stable edge pressure gradient. We’re starting to understand more about lithium’s effect on plasma performance, and early results show lithium isn't getting into the plasma core, which is good news for avoiding diluting the fusion fuel in future plants. The physics is complex, and we’re still learning. But each step brings us closer to fusion energy. In its landing config, the L-1011 featured a system known as Direct Lift Control (DLC), which was quite innovative. With the aircraft fully configured for landing, the spoilers would deploy to a baseline angle of 7°. Pushing the control yoke forward to command a steeper descent would raise the spoilers up to 14° without altering the aircraft's pitch attitude. Pulling back on the yoke would retract the spoilers toward their fully stowed position (0°), boosting lift and reducing the sink rate. Thanks to the DLC, the L-1011 made super stable approaches with rock-solid pitch attitude and rewarded with "greaser" landings more often. Did you know: A similar tech, called Auto-drag, exists in the Boeing 787. This function uses the ailerons and two outboard spoilers to automatically spoil lift/add drag when the airplane is above the glideslope. Autodrag works in conjunction with the autothrottle to automatically capture the vertical path without increasing or losing airspeed.

I thought I'd try to illustrate how Starship 39 made up for a less than optimal sub-orbital insertion and lower-than-planned perigee by using aerodynamics during re-entry to extend its downrange flight profile and make an on-target landing in the Indian Ocean. The ship used a combination of Angle-of Attack (AOA) changes, the flaps and body of the ship as lifting surfaces to manage the total drag forces to "fly" a longer distance, all while managing plasma heating & velocity decreases to prepare for the landing burn. SpaceX had to do this because of the loss of the one RVAC at about the 3:03 mark just after hot staging, resulting in the remaining 5 engines to compensate and burn longer.
