The U.S. has begun saying goodbye to the legendary “Warthog” A-10 The U.S. Air Force disbanded the last four A-10 Thunderbolt II combat units at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. The “Warthogs” had been based there for nearly 50 years, since 1976. The A-10 was designed to support ground troops and destroy armored vehicles. Its main feature is the 30mm seven-barrel GAU-8 cannon, capable of firing up to 4,200 rounds per minute. Thanks to its heavy armor, the aircraft earned the nickname “flying tank.” The A-10 can operate for long periods at low altitude near the front line and withstand serious damage. Aircraft of this type took part in U.S. operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries. The A-10 also became a recognizable symbol of American military aviation and appeared in Transformers, The Terminator, and Man of Steel. The aircraft is not being fully retired just yet.
