Paul Desmond wanted his horn to sound “like a dry martini.” Here he uses the lightest tonguing and a smooth subtone. The sound isn’t bright or harsh the way a lot of bebop playing was. It’s unhurried, airy, and almost casually elegant. 5/4 is an awkward meter to improvise in. Desmond doesn’t crowd it with extra notes just to prove a point. He lays long, lyrical lines over that angular groove and lets the saxophone float across the bar line instead of punching it. That contrast—the square 5/4 pulse against the soft, singing alto—is what still makes this solo land. #TakeFive #PaulDesmond

Michael Kay with an interesting scoop that changes this entire story: Jazz didn’t steal to pad his stats. Aaron Boone told him to steal, because it wasn’t a blowout yet. The Yankees were up by 6 runs at the time, and so there was still a chance they’d have to use Bednar in the 9th. Kay: “Jazz walks to start the 8th inning. As he's running down to first base, Boone shuts Jazz down, says he's not allowed to steal. But then Boone sees that the Red Sox infield is playing behind Jazz. So Boone yells to the Red Sox dugout, ‘No no no, you can't have it both ways. You either hold him on and we won't run, or if you're gonna not hold him on, we are gonna run.’ Red Sox manager] Chad Tracy didn't react. So the Red Sox first baseman still plays behind Jazz. So Boone says, Go steal. And Boone's reasoning is this: I am two batters away in the ninth inning from having to bring in David Bednar. That run is important. If you're gonna hold me on, then fine I won't run. But you can't have it both ways. I would not have Jazz steal if they were holding him on. But I am not going to give up on a free run, which might stop me from bringing in Bednar."

Considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers of all time, Mingus was a major proponent of collective improvisation. In the 1950s, he introduced a new musical device to facilitate his style of composing and playing: the jazz workshop. The music for the first jazz workshops in 1953 had generally been written down before the performance. He felt that improvisation was so intrinsic to jazz that a musician should not be restricted to written scores. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument’s most proficient players. There has been a misconception online that we have switched to a 4-2-3-1 in the last two games. That’s not true. It’s the same 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 we have played all season. Woltemade is playing LCM. My thinking as to why it seems we aren’t is because of the freedom Eddie offers our players within the structure. Woltemade is allowed to move and receive between the lines, just like Willock (when he plays LCM) is allowed to hold width and use his pace in wide areas.

The rest of Michael Foran's talks should go ahead. Freedom of speech is a fundamental academic freedom and it must be upheld. Equally, legitimate and lawful protest has an important place in university life. The task is to maintain both. Especially at events open to the public like this, it is an important Oxford tradition that any disagreement is expressed in a civil and respectful way.

She’s trying to hold space for a serious "national news" moment, and this kid just walks in with zero filter and ruins the professional polish in the best way possible. The way he dropped that line while his mom was basically playing goalie in the background, was an absolute pro move keeping the cameras rolling.
