i swear i remember an episode of some "my big secret" type tv show from like the early/mid 00's that had this exact thing happen. dude was incredibly flamboyant, but was convinced he was straight passing, and when he went to confess to his best friend, she was like "....and?"

I spent most of secondary (high school), defending the honour of this kid who was always bullied for being gay (this was the 90s!), explaining you can’t just call him gay because he’s a bit camp, hangs out with girls etc … school ends and he THEN comes out, boy did I feel a fool
