The officer was at our department at the time. Our leadership,... Critical Incident Support Management and Peer Support teams are fully engaged and supporting the officer's family and all our staff during this very difficult and emotional time. Our focus and attention will remain on all staff and the officer’s family to ensure that the appropriate and required supports are in place. It is important that I recognize our officers and staff continue to provide policing and public safety services to Saanich as they process their own emotions and sense of loss – this exemplifies teamwork, support, and commitment. We are very grateful for all the support and assistance received yesterday from Saanich Fire, Emergency Health Services (Ambulance), the Island Health medical teams at Royal Jubilee Hospital, the Victoria Police, Oak Bay Police, Central Saanich Police, West Shore RCMP, and all other partner agencies during this difficult time. On Monday afternoon around 3:40 p.m., a 21-year-old off-duty deputy was involved in a traffic collision on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. He was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Our deputy joined the Department on May 2, 2024, and had recently completed the academy. He was proudly serving at the North County Correctional Facility, dedicating himself to protecting and helping others. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own, who was taken from us far too soon,” said Sheriff Robert G. Luna. “Our Deputy dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, both in and out of uniform. His commitment to public safety was not just a job—it was who he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.” We are providing full support to the deputy’s family, including transportation and resources, as they navigate this unimaginable loss. BREAKING: 26-Year-Old West Yorkshire Police Officer Charlie Mitchell Found Dead A serving West Yorkshire Police officer, who was reported missing, has been found dead. Charlie Mitchell, aged 26, was off duty when he was reported missing from home in Leeds on Saturday night, with concerns for his welfare. Officers had been carrying out a search of St Aidan’s Nature Reserve when they found his body at about 5.30pm on Sunday. His family has been informed, and officers are continuing to provide support to them at this difficult time. There are no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office has been informed. PC Mitchell was a Patrol officer based at Halifax. His colleagues are being offered support. To those considering coming to our city to commit crimes or victimize our residents, your actions will not be tolerated and we will not allow you to prey on our residents during a time of crisis. Day and night, we remain dedicated to ensuring the security of your homes and loved ones. Our team is proactively monitoring the evacuation zone, and all sworn officers have transitioned to a tactical alert, ensuring that we have a full contingent of officers available 24 hours a day. During this period we received assistance from our mutual aid partner cities, special thanks to Culver City, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Hawthorne and Redondo Beach. These resources have been a crucial part of our proactive public safety efforts. We are steadfast in our commitment to respond swiftly to any needs that arise. Throughout the past several days the SMPD and our mutual aid partners have contacted hundreds of people on foot or in cars and we have arrested individuals in our evacuation and evacuation warning zones that were in possession of weapons, stolen property or wanted for serious felony crimes in our region. To those considering coming to our city to commit crimes or victimize our residents, your actions will not be tolerated and we will not allow you to prey on our residents during a time of crisis. Day and night, we remain dedicated to ensuring the security of your homes and loved ones. Our team is proactively monitoring the evacuation zone, and all sworn officers have transitioned to a tactical alert, ensuring that we have a full contingent of officers available 24 hours a day. During this period we received assistance from our mutual aid partner cities, special thanks to Culver City, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Hawthorne and Redondo Beach. These resources have been a crucial part of our proactive public safety efforts. We are steadfast in our commitment to respond swiftly to any needs that arise. Safety is a partnership between the police and the community—it is also our strongest weapon as we fight crime. We need everyone to follow the curfew orders, the curfew order for the evacuation zone is in effect from sunset to sunrise. Bomb Threat St James’s Hospital In a statement the Trust said: “We received a telephone threat concerning ward J42 at St James’s University Hospital. West Yorkshire Police are on site leading the response.
