A 36-year-old man was killed in a police standoff in Houston on Monday after firing a high-powered rifle at officers. According to Houston police, the operation started shortly after 10:25 a.m., when HPD was asked to help with a barricaded suspect during a warrant service in the southeast part of the city. Assistant Chief James Skelton said officers arrived at 10:29 a.m. and activated the department’s SWAT team. By then, the man was inside the house and refusing to surrender. Negotiators from the attorney general’s office tried for about an hour and a half to get him to come out peacefully, but Skelton said those efforts did not work. At about 12:30 p.m., police said, the man stepped out of the home holding what officers described as a high-powered rifle.
