A handful of my ancestors during that time, practiced plural marriage. I was interested in how their experiences aligned with the social perception of plural marriage being: older men marrying a bunch of young women. As I researched that in my own family lines, I found that the majority of plural marriages, after the first youthful marriage for both parties, were generally what I term “rescue marriages”, in which the added, wife was of similar age, had been abandoned, divorced, widowed, or abused, and often with accompanying children. Remember how rough the frontier was, requiring strength and courage, and many hands to survive. In one case my gggrandfather, at age 83, married an 84 year old widow. There is NO record or intimation that plural marriage was about sex parties, or that participants were promiscuous.

This is great stuff. The Brethren are aware and paying attention to the conversations happening online.

Would be interesting to see a structured debate where said historical evidences are put forth and critically analyzed. I know @cboyack is in the Joseph didn’t practice polygamy camp. Hehas also researched the topic in depth with interesting historical evidences supporting his claim. He also rationally addresses the data to support the claim Joseph did practice it. Probably won’t happen since the topic is so taboo. I for one, have no problem accepting the truth whichever side it falls on.

I wonder how people who are bothered by the temporary polygamy commandment feel about the commandment to kill all men, women, children, and animals in the lands the lord gave to the Israelites.

I recognize the vast evidence that JS was “married OR sealed” to women other than Emma. But to say God commanded this practice (especially the later Utah version of it), is unfortunate. I fear we read Jacob 2:30 wrong. And D&C 20, 42, and 124. Polygamy was objective disaster.

I’m the result of early Latter-day Saints who faithfully practiced polygamy as commanded by the Lord through His prophets. It was divinely instituted as a way to raise up faithful people. Had it not been practiced for the time it was permitted, I suppose the church would not have survived. But, the Lord wanted His church to succeed and polygamy was the path forward to help it succeed. Consider the 50 year window when it was allowed from 1840 to 1890. The United States was focused on settling the issue with slavery and fought a horrible war over it. The saints colonized much of the mountain west and during this time polygamy brought about large families of believers in relative isolation. When the Civil War ended, the government felt it needed to turn its attention on the saints and stopping polygamy. False accusations about the saints were spread among government leaders. At one point during his Presidency Ulysses S. Grant toured Salt Lake City and noticed the vibrant community and healthy families. He remarked, “I have been deceived”. Yes, there were bad actors among the saints, but generally the main group were faithful to raising strong families. I’ve read my forebears’ journals and they speak of the good family life they enjoyed. When the Lord saw fit, He commanded the practice to be ended. I’m grateful for my obedient and faithful ancestors. They sacrificed much to pave the way for me and for future generations.

They’re not “critically evaluating”…they’re perpetuating an incredibly self-serving narrative. Words matter: it’s monogamy affirming, not polygamy denial. And no, it isn’t a theory but nice try on marginalizing. Now try Covid and “follow the science.”

Explain what happened to the original revelation of DC101- the law of marriage. Why was it removed?

Many women claimed to have birthed Smith's children. DNA evidence has proven those women lied. Instead of poo-pooing "polygamy deniers" the church would be better served by exploring the question, "why did those women lie?"

Astounding to me that people deny this or say that Smith was mistaken or a fallen prophet. Same thinking would apply to Nephi slaying Laban as not a commandment from God, but merly murder. These men are inspired by God. Sometimes, God's ways go beyond our understanding.

God didn't condemn multiple wives anciently taken to grow his covenant people from a couple into a nation strong enough to survive amidst multiple enemies Each Biblical case involved a specific problem and was done by mutual consent of the parties. Abraham: barren wife Jacob: bait and switch, barren wife David: bitter first wife, took additional wives to produce his heir Solomon Solomon: extremely wealthy king, multiple wives to cement peaceful alliances and possibly support vulnerable women, produce an heir Some point to the NT monogamy standard but forget that the covenant people were numerous by then. In Abraham's time, the covenant people was his household and he needed an heir to perpetuate it. In Jacob's time, the covenant people was a tribe and he needed a posterity to perpetuate it. In David's and Solomon's time God was building a strong covenant nation. By Jesus's time, the covenant people were a nation. Plural marriage was thus no longer needed.

Many claim that polygamy was instituted for the purpose of rapidly expanding the church. Yet it is a primary turn-off to missionary work whereas people found every real doctrine of the Gospel virtuous, lovely, appealing... polygamy was repellent to them. I join with Joseph Smith & Gordon B. Hinkley in his position that it's condemnable and not doctrinal.

An important distinction to make here: neither Joseph nor Brigham "practiced polygamy." They covenanted to live the Law of Chastity by way of Plural Marriage and Temple Sealings. The two practices might seem superficially similar, but they are miles apart doctrinally.

Joe Smith “married” (actually he just fucked then) 33 women. 2 were fourteen, 9 other teens, 11 women married to other men, and at least 10 other women included a mother daughter. Smith was a sexual predator.
