VIDEO | Mumbai: Clarifying her remarks made in Maharashtra Assembly, NCP MLA Sana Malik says, “The discussion was primarily about issues related to women, family matters, and divorce. During the debate, BJP MLA Devayani Farande referred to Pakistan and stated that certain laws concerning polygamy are implemented there. In response, I said that Pakistan should not be used as a reference point to guide Indian Muslims. If any guidance is to be given, it should come from the Quran, because Pakistan itself follows principles that it derives from Islamic teachings. Therefore, if someone wishes to cite a reference, they should cite the Quranic source rather than Pakistan. As Muslims and as Indians, we have nothing to do with Pakistan, nor do we consider Pakistan an ideological model.” She added, “Regarding polygamy, my position was that we follow what is prescribed in the Quran. The argument being made was that since Pakistan has certain laws regarding polygamy, similar provisions should be implemented here. My response was that Pakistan has not done anything fundamentally different; it has merely followed what is prescribed in Islamic teachings. Therefore, if one wants to cite an authority, the appropriate reference is the Quran, not Pakistan. Under Muslim Personal Law, polygamy is permitted. The Constitution of India grants citizens the right to practice their religion. In that context, if such practices are carried out within the framework of the law, they are permitted. In fact, polygamy is already allowed under Muslim Personal Law and exists within that legal framework.” #UCC #Maharashtra #SanaMalik (Full video available on PTI Videos -
