Born in Chicago, Pope Leo spent much of his career as a missionary in Peru, where he became a bishop and later a citizen. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution. In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour."

Pope Leo meets with Catholic Charities USA. In his address, the Pope recognized that personal and institutional difficulties often confront those who seek to care for the poor. These include "demonstrating to others that this type of service is an integral part of authentic Christian living", the Pope said. Catholic Charities USA is “by no means immune from these challenges", Pope Leo said. “Yet," he emphasized, "it is precisely when we are confronted with such obstacles that we must learn to hear Jesus’ voice saying to us once more, ‘I am with you always!’”
