Mosses are poikilohydric, meaning they can survive near-total dehydration (like a dried-out husk) and rapidly rehydrate, sometimes within minutes, when water is reintroduced, allowing them to thrive in diverse environments.

For the last two decades, during the spring floods, the water has been running out of this old mulberry tree in a village of Dinoša, Montenegro. It's likely due to high groundwater pressure coupled with a hollow section in the tree.

Did you know? When trees are planted in places with low water supply and drought, this method can be used, it consists of placing Nopal cactus leaves half a meter deep next to the young trees roots and covering them with soil. The Nopal leaves contain a substance called mucilage, commonly known as Nopal slime, this is a polymer capable of forming layers that have the property of retaining water moisture for a long time and this allows the tree to absorb water for up to 5 years. Almost nothing in this world is as good at living as moss. It thrives where almost no other living creature can dwell. When enough water has accumulated, the moss's leaves — grey during dry spells — begin to unfurl creating a spot of vivid green

Behold the near magical world of Sphagnum moss. The young cells at the top of each plant are lined with acids that release protons into the environment. This helps the moss trap nutrients and lower pH, making them carbon storage experts and wicked competitors. RESPECT THE MOSS!

Instant revival. Moss is a fascinating and very resilient plant. It doesn't have roots or "veins" like we see in leaves, and they can remain dormant for very long periods of time and even a light rain or dense fog will be enough to resume photosynthesis.

Moss is a top 10 ick for me. It just grosses me out that it can live on pretty much anything. My Portland friends have to de-moss things like their car trunks. Whyyyyy?! Ackkkk! I can't be alone in this

Small rains. Even the smallest rain events help the plant find moisture. Each leaf is cupped and sloped towards the stem. Here the surface area of each plant captures rain and directs it towards the root zone.

Nature's fragility is a reminder: everything can be corrupted. Good thing we're building systems that don't rely on trust.
