The real accident which was later re-used for movies... June 23 1951: a US Navy F9 [Reg. “125228”] crashes attempting to land on carrier USS Midway, off Virginia (US). Pilot George C. Duncan survives. Accident occurred on trials, draft pushed the jet below deck. Despite his injuries, Duncan was back to flying duties within six months. The accident was caused by an unexpected downdraft that caused the jet to drop just before the flight deck, leading to a severe "ramp strike." The aircraft struck the edge of the deck and tore completely in two, bursting into massive flames. The forward cockpit section skidded violently down the wooden deck with Duncan inside. Remarkably, deck crews pulled Duncan from the burning wreckage, and he survived with only minor injuries, including scorched ears, returning to flight within six months. Because the crash was captured on film, it became a crucial safety training tool for naval aviators. But the iconic footage also crossed over into pop culture, being featured as stock footage in prominent Hollywood films like *Men of the Fighting Lady* (1954), *Midway* (1976), and *The Hunt for Red October* (1990)—where it famously stood in for a modern F-14 Tomcat. Duncan went on to have a highly successful naval career, commanding air groups in the Korean War and captaining the aircraft carrier USS Ranger before retiring in 1968. The incident is a reminder of the dangers in early, carrier-based military jet operations before modern safety innovations like angled flight decks and mirror landing systems were introduced.
