The accident was caused by an unexpected downdraft that caused the jet to drop just before the flight deck, leading to a severe "ramp strike." According to the Houston Police Department, officers were called at 5:38 a.m. about a passenger attempting to enter the cockpit. The plane had briefly taken off before turning back to the airport.
