🇺🇸 Prediction markets could start deciding elections instead of just predicting them. The danger is the feedback loop: a political narrative moves the betting markets → the movement becomes news → perceived momentum brings attention, credibility and potentially funding → that momentum can begin influencing the race the market... supposedly exists merely to predict. California recently offered a striking example of the mechanism: a purported poll showing Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass comfortably ahead was amplified by her campaign, and within minutes election-market prices moved in her favor. The poll was later retracted as fabricated. A false political signal had already become a financial signal before the truth caught up. And that creates potentially explosive incentives for propaganda, lies, corruption and cover-ups. If suppressing a damaging story for 48 hours, or successfully flooding the information environment with a misleading one, can move the market, political actors gain another reason to manipulate not just what voters know, but when they know it. With prediction markets operating continuously and attaching prices to an expanding universe of political events, winning the market narrative could become half the political battle. same mechanism as a pump and dump: the exploit isn't fooling the market, it's the lag between the fake signal and the correction. whoever is positioned to trade inside that window profits regardless of what happens after, so the fix is faster verification, not less market.

I began comparing my first earnings interpretation with my later note. The useful part was learning to see where additional information changed the reading.

Definitely a slippery slope for democracy.

When people show up to vote, they should be expected to write down the name of the person they are voting for instead of just filling in one of the many circles next to a list of names.
