Key highlights include: - The World Bank is financing a $500 million intervention to strengthen Nigeria's electricity distribution sector. - $250 million from the intervention has been earmarked specifically for the procurement and deployment of electricity meters. - The DISREP programme targets the installation of 3.22 million electricity meters across the country. - So far, contracts have been awarded for 1.4 million meters under the programme. - About 1.1 million meters have already arrived in Nigeria. - More than 700,000 meters have been successfully installed nationwide. - The installations are being carried out by trained young Nigerians, creating employment opportunities while improving electricity service delivery. - The Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) will complement the World Bank-supported programme to accelerate nationwide metering. - Combined, the PMI and DISREP programmes are expected to deliver about seven million electricity meters, exceeding Nigeria's current estimated 5.6 million metering gap. - The additional meters will also cater for new electricity customers expected to join the national grid in the coming years.
