USAID paid taxes, import duties, and permit fees directly to the Taliban—the same group responsible for killing over 2,500 U.S. servicemembers and hundreds of thousands of Afghans. USAID allowed its local implementing partners to distribute American aid to active Taliban commanders. USAID’s cash assistance went to the families of Taliban who were killed during the Global War on Terrorism. At USAID distribution centers, American cash and aid were handed out in the name of the Taliban leader, explicitly to win Afghan hearts and minds for the Taliban. These were not isolated mistakes. While USAID has no doubt done some good, it has also done significant and irreversible damage. I respect your strong position on holding the powerful accountable. I listened to your positions on Shawn Ryan’s podcast. But as far as USAID is concerned, it had to be stopped and investigated.
