On the last day of his summit in China, President Trump said President Xi Jinping asked him about Taiwan. China wants the U.S. to stop weapons sales to Taiwan, but Trump told reporters he made "no commitment either way" and will "make a determination over the next fairly short period." Human rights and democracy advocates are concerned that if Beijing retakes control of Taiwan without protest, the consequences would be detrimental to not only Taiwan, but to U.S. relationships with other allies around the globe.

He said the island must build its defense strategy around China’s long-term goals.
