For the past eight months, Syed Bibi has faced continuous harassment by state authorities. After being placed on the Fourth Schedule, she was required to report to the CTD office every week while her phone and communications remained under constant surveillance. A widow living in Turbat with her two young children, Syed Bibi supported her family through traditional embroidery after her husband’s death. Since being placed on the Fourth Schedule, however, she has endured sustained psychological pressure and intimidation. Her bank accounts were frozen, her embroidery business collapsed, and obstacles were created even in relation to her children’s education, making it nearly impossible to live a normal life because of her dissenting views. Four days ago, following the Baloch Yakjehti Committee’s announcement of a rally in Turbat, the pressure against her intensified. Throughout the day, she received repeated calls and threats from CTD officials. Later that night, at around 9:30 p.m., security personnel raided her home, arrested her, and took her to the Women’s Police Station, where she was told she would be released after the rally concluded. She was released at approximately 10:00 p.m. the following night. Just thirty minutes later, she received another call stating that Military Intelligence (MI) personnel wanted to question her. She replied that she could not appear in the middle of the night and would present herself the next morning. Despite this, police raided her home three times during the night, breaking down the door, damaging household belongings, and searching the premises. Officers also raided her mother’s home, harassed family members, attempted to forcibly take away her bedridden brother, photographed the interior of the house, and caused further damage to property. Fearing for their safety, Syed Bibi spent the night with her two children in a graveyard beside her late husband’s grave. The next morning, she spoke to the media at the Turbat Press Club and publicly described the events. While there, she received another call instructing her to report to the CTD office. When she complied, she was arrested again and detained for one month under the 3 MPO. The treatment of Syed Bibi Baloch raises serious concerns about human rights, civil liberties, due process, and the rule of law. Silence in the face of such allegations risks creating an environment in which further abuses may occur. Press Conference Respected Members of the Press, I stand before you today to share the gross violations of the basic human rights of the Baloch people in this state. As many of you are aware, last night at Karachi Airport and in its vicinity, state intelligence agencies, the FIA, and the Sindh Police violated my fundamental rights as a citizen and subjected us to indefensible treatment. An internationally renowned magazine, TIME, included me in this year’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and I was invited to attend their event in New York. My flight was scheduled to depart from Karachi to New York last night. After completing all the required procedures at Jinnah International Airport, the Immigration Department unjustly prevented me from boarding. When I sought an explanation, the FIA officer walked away without providing any reasons. I was detained at the airport for five hours without legal justification. After my flight had departed and as we were leaving, a female FIA officer confiscated my passport and refused to return it. It took over an hour of negotiations before she reluctantly handed it back. When we finally departed for home, just five minutes into our drive, state intelligence agents and Sindh Police officers stopped our car. Sammi Deen Baloch and another female friend accompanied me. The officers immediately removed our driver, assaulted him, and immobilized the car by taking its keys. They opened all the doors and thoroughly searched the vehicle, including underneath our seats. When we attempted to speak to them, we were forcibly dragged out of the car, our scarves were yanked off, and we were subjected to verbal abuse and severe harassment. They then forcibly seized our bags, taking my passport, mobile phone, and car keys. We were stranded on a deserted road very late at night. Two vehicles approached us, and the individuals inside further harassed us, hurling obscene insults before leaving. Feeling unsafe, we abandoned our car, took a taxi, and went home. It was a painful and distressing ordeal to endure such inhumane treatment in this country, merely because I am a human rights activist and a Baloch, treated worse than animals. Respected Members of the Press, The events of last night, where I was unjustly prevented from traveling and subjected to such inhumane treatment, clearly demonstrate that the state of Pakistan has deprived us of even the most basic right to live. It is evident that human rights no longer exist for us. Despite holding a valid U.S. visa and an official invitation from an international magazine, I was detained for five hours at Karachi's international airport, prohibited from traveling, harassed, and had my belongings confiscated. If this is how I was treated, imagine the kind of treatment the ordinary Baloch people endure in Balochistan. Through this press conference, I want to send a clear message to the state and its institutions: such tactics will neither silence us nor deter us from raising our voices against the violations of human rights in Balochistan. On the contrary, these actions only strengthen our resolve, and we will continue to organize and speak out against the abuse and genocide of the Baloch people.
