As a chess player, I understand the discipline, patience, and strategic thinking the game demands. These are not just skills for the board, they are skills for life. Yesterday, I had the distinct honour of meeting with legendary Chess Grandmaster Judit Polgár as the Jamaica Chess Federation launched a bold and visionary initiative, to create Jamaica’s first chess grandmaster within the next 10 years. More than a title this programme is about sharpening the minds of our children, giving them the tools to think critically, to plan, to problem-solve, and to persevere. It’s about planting seeds of excellence in communities across Jamaica and watching a generation rise with the confidence that they, too, can be among the world’s best. I fully support this programme, and commend the leadership of the Jamaica Chess Federation as they continue the remarkable work of expanding and popularizing chess as another avenue through which our country can pursue and achieve greatness. Beyond being a sport, I believe in what chess can unlock in the minds of our youth; building capacity, creating opportunities, and expanding the landscape of what is possible for our people.

It is 40 years since Garry Garry Kasparov defeated Anatoly Karpov in the World Championship 1985 to become the World Chess Champion. A fan showed us two of his prized possessions - the World Championship book 1985, which he got signed by Kasparov after the game! All Pakistan Independence Day Football Tournament - Loralai 1. In collaboration with FC #Balochistan (North) and local administration, All #Pakistan Independence day football tournament was organized in Loralai to promote positive activities among the youth. 2. A total of 64 teams participated in the football tournament out of which 36 were from Balochistan and remaining 27 were from the other provinces of the country. 3. Tournament was organized from 14th August till 17th Oct 2023. 4. Final match of the tournament was played between Loralai and Islamabad Club.After a thrilling match prince club Loralai was declared the winner of the tournament. 5. A large number of civil and military officials, tribal elders, and local youth were present during the match. Former Governor Balochistan, Sardar Gul Muhammad Joghezai was the chief guest of the event who awarded cash prizes and trophies to the teams and players. 6. The local elders and youth appreciated the initiative taken by FC Balochistan in order to promote sports activities in the region.

Tata Steel Chess India in Kolkata didn’t go my way on the board, but there were positives to take away. Off the board, it was wonderful to see so many fans turning up, supporting and cheering for the players. I truly enjoyed that experience. Now heading to the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee, a very prestigious event. The field this year looks extremely interesting and probably one of the youngest too. Looking forward to the next two weeks of chess! Do follow the event, and if you’re in the Netherlands, come by and watch the games. See you there. Cheers!

Battle Chess was a brilliant 1988 game by Interplay Entertainment that revolutionized chess gaming. Pieces animate vividly on the board, exploding into hilarious, brutal combat sequences during captures. So, instead of the (many) rather dry and standard chess games that existed, Battle Chess took the more playful path. For a while, I tried all the different battle animations, sacrificing pieces , just to see how they would perish. All jokes aside, it got me into chess more than anything else. Did you play it back in the day?

And, the Provincial Minister Syed appreciated the Aga Khan family’s commendable contributions in education, health, and other sectors, stating that their association with Pakistan strengthens bilateral ties. The Minister emphasized that the Ismaili community plays a key role in the development of Sindh and Pakistan, and affirmed that cooperation between the Sindh Government and the Aga Khan family will continue for community and provincial development and prosperity.
