A fascinating interaction between a wolf and a bear at a bait pile put out by a local bear hunting guide. The bear initially chases the wolf away, but 5 minutes later, the wolf and bear are feeding at the bait pile a few feet from each other. We are currently in the 2nd week of the bear baiting season, and the hunting season opens tomorrow. Starting in mid-August, hunters maintain bait piles stocked with foods such as nuts, candies, donuts, and dried fruit to get bears visiting the area before the season opens on Sept. 1. All in all, bear hunting is a boon for wolves because it happens at their leanest time of year. As a result, wolves quickly find the bait piles in their territories and spend considerable time eating the bait (as you can see here). Once bear hunting season begins, the situation gets even better for wolves for three reasons: The first is that bear season results in many gut piles which wolves will eat in a heartbeat (and they excel at finding them). The second is that hunters and guides discard the remains of bear carcasses they have butchered (we know this always surprises some but people eat bear meat…we have had it and it is pretty tasty). Wolves find these carcasses and spend a lot of time scavenging every last morsel. The third reason: some bears are wounded or killed but not recovered by hunters. Both scenarios create opportunities for wolves to get the biggest-ticket item of bear season: an entire bear carcass. When bears are killed but not recovered, wolves win the lottery: a 100 to 300+ pound buffet just sitting in the woods, ready to be consumed. For a 60- to 70-pound wolf at the leanest time of year, that is about as good as it gets. When bears are wounded, wolves almost certainly can and will kill and consume them if the bear is vulnerable enough. We have studied wolf predation for the past 12 years, and almost the only time we have documented predation on black bears is in September, and to a lesser extent, early October. Overall, bear hunting almost certainly increases the interactions between wolves and bears. Some interactions, such as this one, are chill—with both animals tolerating each other. And the big aerospace companies had just had no interest in radical innovation. All they wanted to do was try to make their old technology slightly better every year. And in fact, sometimes it would actually get worse. And particularly in rockets, it's pretty bad. In 1969 we were able to go to the moon with a Saturn V and then the space shuttle could only take people to low Earth orbit. And then the space shuttle retired. When it comes to personal finance, people somehow keep making the same mistakes over and over again. There’s very little creativity in the mistakes people make. Take investing. Pretty much every influencer, every serious finance writer, and the financial media have been screaming for years: don’t mix insurance with investments. ULIPs are usually a bad idea. Endowment policies are usually a bad idea. And yet, ULIP sales continue to grow and endowment plans continue to be sold. People continue to fall for the same pitches, despite all the articles, videos, and excel sheets explaining why these products are bad. The same applies to health insurance, though I have a little more sympathy there. Health insurance is genuinely complicated. There are tiny clauses, room rent caps, waiting periods, exclusions, and conditions that most people don’t fully understand and then they find out the hard way, when they still have to pay out of pocket despite having a policy. But with products like ULIPs and endowment plans, there’s no excuse. These are not impossibly complicated products. Even a cursory Google search will tell you the problem. And today, in 2026, you can just ask ChatGPT or Claude whether a product is a good idea, and they’ll usually show you the math, explain the catches, and give you pointers on what to do. And yet, people still keep falling for the same thing. Prateek Singh from Zero1 by Zerodha has made a really nice video on some of the biggest mistakes Indians make with investing and health insurance. It’s worth watching, and sharing with your friends and family too.

Endowment policies are usually a bad idea. And yet, ULIP sales continue to grow and endowment plans continue to be sold. People continue to fall for the same pitches, despite all the articles, videos, and excel sheets explaining why these products are bad. The same applies to health insurance, though I have a little more sympathy there. Health insurance is genuinely complicated. There are tiny clauses, room rent caps, waiting periods, exclusions, and conditions that most people don’t fully understand and then they find out the hard way, when they still have to pay out of pocket despite having a policy. But with products like ULIPs and endowment plans, there’s no excuse. These are not impossibly complicated products. Even a cursory Google search will tell you the problem. And today, in 2026, you can just ask ChatGPT or Claude whether a product is a good idea, and they’ll usually show you the math, explain the catches, and give you pointers on what to do. And yet, people still keep falling for the same thing. Prateek Singh from Zero1 by Zerodha has made a really nice video on some of the biggest mistakes Indians make with investing and health insurance. It’s worth watching, and sharing with your friends and family too.
