Stanford student Elsa Johnson is presumably “Anna” in the investigative article “Uncovering Chinese Academic Espionage at Stanford” published in The Stanford Review in May. Now Elsa speaks out in person. It all started with a message sent to Elsa on Instagram by a stranger, a man calling himself Charles Chen and claiming he’s an international student at Stanford, on June 10, 2024. “Have we met on campus?” It’s the same playbook: someone claiming to be a 🇨🇳 student “slips into your DMs”. They start out friendly with inquiries about your home life and ask whether or not you have mutual friends. Sometimes they point out shared interests and invite you to hang out. Then the hard sell begins, with offers of an all-expenses-paid trip to China. They might flatter you with compliments and claim you can make money in the country as a social media star. If the conversation progresses, they may ask about your research, academic achievements over the years or the software you might use in class. This is exactly what Charles did. He shared videos of another woman he claimed was a Stanford student. “She was on a TV show in China and is famous now!” The implication: Elsa, too, could become prosperous and popular in China. On June 27, Charles pressed the point. “You really should travel to China soon … A bunch of people at Stanford have been to China this summer. If someone pays for you, would you come?” He sent her a flight itinerary from LA to Shanghai that cost $912 with China Eastern Airlines. “I can take care of your accommodation and transportation here.” He showed her a bank wire worth $5,485 that he received in May to prove he could afford it. Elsa told him it’s too expensive but he persisted. “It’s not worth it for a quick trip,” she replied. Elsa alerted two trusted Chinese experts at Stanford to tell them she’s worried she’s being targeted. They put her in touch with an FBI contact who worked with the college on cases of CCP-related espionage. She met them in Sep, handing over the screenshots and the names of other people that Charles said he had been in touch with. Charles was found to have no affiliation with Stanford. He had probably posed for years as a student with fake Instagram and LinkedIn profiles that he used to target people researching China-related topics. Elsa identified as many as 10 other female students who had been targeted by this individual since 2020. Charles was likely to be associated with 🇨🇳 ministry of state security, and he’s probably conducting an elaborate entrapment operation targeting young female students. The FBI confirmed that several of the 1,129 🇨🇳 students at Stanford were reporting to the CCP. The fact that he targeted young, white American women is significant. The CCP apparently sees people like Elsa as valuable assets in their propaganda war, who can give the impression that there’s nothing to fear from China. These spies want to learn how leading universities such as Stanford are developing key technologies that are giving the US an edge over China. Finished Pragmata. Genuinely a beautiful experience. A story about the family we choose instead of the one we are given. An inhuman girl on a different world learning what it means to be human, and an Orphan passing on the love his adopted parents gave him by doing the same for her. Certainly a game of the year contender, Pragmata has no fluff, bloat or instances of slow pacing. It offers a unique take on 3rd person shooter combat, blending it with a hacking mini-game that on paper sounds tedious and annoying, but somehow ends up being both creative and fun. Hugh and Diana are two halves of a whole, both in gameplay and the narrative. They don't work without each other, all of Hugh's weapons fulfill different roles inside the sandbox making no two options the same. Diana's hacking mods encourage strategy, quick thinking and moment to moment decision making without halting the fast paced combat. It's a system I don't think we've ever really seen before and the fact that Capcom was able to both make a hacking minigame that's fun instead of tedious and interweave it with real time combat without ruining the pacing, is truly a testament to how much creativity and thought went into the game design. The levels all encourage backtracking, have a ton of verticality and always remain a decent size so sections never drag on for too long, in fact I'd argue some sections of the game could've been longer. The small puzzles around levels or in training are less designed for challenge and more-so to breakup the combat, so you'll never be spending a lot of time frying your brain on any of them. The enemy design is varied and you have to approach all of them differently, using different weapons and hacking mods which are more useful on some than others, and the fact that all weapons (except your primary) and mods have very limited ammo means you'll be carefully considering what weapons/mods you use on what enemy, instead of randomly blasting any you come across with your strongest weapon. There's a good variety of unlockables as well, outfits for Hugh and Diana, new weapons, mods, the stuff you would expect, all the way up until you beat the game which will give you rewards to use in NG+, there's a good amount of stuff to play with and the customization is solid. If I had a few criticisms, I'd say I wish we got at least one more primary weapon and maybe a few more unique looking suits for Hugh, since some of them are borderline color swaps. The story is a fantastic one, character driven rather than plot driven. Hugh and Diana's adopted father/daughter dynamic carries the game on it's back, Hugh guiding and teaching Diana what it means to be human, providing her the small glimpses of joys that earth can provide and giving her the parental guidance and love she never received, just as his adopted parents did for him. It's all about the small character moments between these two. I teared up on multiple occasions, especially the ending which was heartfelt, satisfying and conclusive. Whoever decided that some of the collectibles would just be toys for Diana needs a raise, it might be the most sweet, wholesome collectibles in any game I've ever seen. I found myself wanting to find them just to watch Diana be happy and get her to draw more cute pictures, it's really the cutest thing. The music, art style, visuals, all of it is great though there's only two tracks that really standout in my mind and they both come at the every end. The game is on the shorter side, I did all available content and beat it within 13 hours, but NG+ offers additional content and beating the game unlocks a new mode, so there's still stuff left to do and new toys to play with. The shorter runtime encouraging replayability. This is what we needed, a cool new I.P with creative, innovative mechanics, a heartwarming story in an interesting new world and likeable new characters we all want to root for. I’ve had someone offer me $40 for backing into my headlamp of my Mitsubishi Evolution. It was parked in front of my friend’s house and we were on his porch waiting for him to get ready when his neighbor backed out of the drive and his tow hitch cracked my headlamp. I told him that headlamp was way more than $40 and I hurried up and snapped some pics of him and the truck along with the plate. He then got mad and hurried up and left, I ended up making a police report for it. The police ended up catching the man who fled the scene and turns out he didn’t have insurance, that’s why he was in a hurry to leave, and he didn’t have a license. They ended up arresting the man for that. The neighbor later tried to confront us for reporting his friend for the hit and run, my friend’s mom overheard what was going on and came out to yell at him back and threatened to call the cops. After that the man always gave us dirty looks when we were there, I also never park on the street anymore either for that same reason. This man’s girl rear ended somebody will merging onto the road, her boyfriend jumps out to offer the guy $40-60 dollars for the paint damage. Like that will even cover that. While the man is talking to the owner of the car she hit, she acts like she’s about to take off and leave the boyfriend behind. At least it ended well, the owner ended up calling the police but everyone stayed chill.

Just finished listening to Mechanic #BIP-110 's break down the spam attack vector and what he lays out is disturbing, not just technically but philosophically. Here’s the short version. Some entities are exploiting a loophole in Bitcoin’s design. They are not using inscriptions, not using op_return, but instead creating fake pubkeys to store arbitrary data on-chain. It sits in a kind of sweet spot. Not big enough to trigger current filters in Core, but damaging enough to bloat the UTXO set and push out regular node runners. And somehow the conversation has shifted. Instead of defending Bitcoin’s core purpose, some dev voices are floating the idea that we should work with the spammers. That maybe if we remove the remaining filters, the abuse will become more manageable. This is a bizarre and dangerous line of thinking. Bitcoin was never built to serve as a data dumpster. It was built to be money. Sound, verifiable, scarce. When we start redesigning Bitcoin to appease people who are actively trying to harm it, we lose the very thing that gave it credibility. Mechanic calls it out plainly. The same people who claim filters do nothing are suddenly demanding we remove them to help the spammers. It is a contradiction. A bait-and-switch. Break the protocol, then use the damage as leverage to weaken it further. This is not how strong systems survive. In Aug 2025, Elsa Johnson, a Stanford student, wrote a piece for The Times about how members of the CCP tried to recruit her as a spy. Since then, the junior, who is majoring in East Asian Studies, has faced a wave of harassment from Mandarin speakers who have called her and threatened her and her family. The FBI also informed Johnson that the CCP is physically monitoring her whereabouts on campus — making her fear for her own safety. On Mar 26 she testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, urging Congress to do something to protect America’s students who “face transnational repression”, given that Stanford “has chosen not to address this problem at all”. Here is an abridged and lightly edited version of her testimony. ======= After I wrote a first-person account of my experience in The Times of London, the repression only worsened. Last summer, while conducting research on China in Washington, DC, I began receiving regular phone calls from unknown US numbers. When I answered the calls in English, the callers would switch to Mandarin. In one case, the caller referenced my mother. These bizarre calls were intimidation attempts, designed to remind me that neither my family, nor I, is safe from transnational repression by the CCP. Then, this past fall, the FBI informed me that I am being physically monitored on Stanford’s campus by agents of the Chinese Communist Party. They told me that my family is also at risk and is being monitored. As a 21-year-old who grew up loving the Chinese language and culture, I never imagined that studying it would put me in a position where a foreign intelligence service is tracking my movements on my own campus and monitoring my family. I fear for my safety and for my family’s safety. The intimidation calls have not stopped. Just this week, I received another call from a US number. After exchanging hellos, the caller switched to Mandarin and asked whether I had finished dinner. That cannot be a coincidence. It is happening to me on American soil because I reported on the activities of a foreign government at an American university. My experience is disturbing, but it reflects a much larger pattern playing out on campuses across the country. According to Freedom House, the Chinese government is the greatest perpetrator of transnational repression targeting students and scholars in the United States. Their 2024 report found that international students and faculty face surveillance and coercion by foreign governments. More than 1.3 million international students study at American colleges and universities, yet many are unable to exercise the freedoms that are supposed to define an American education. There is also infrastructure already embedded on American campuses that facilitates this system. Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs) exist at roughly 150 American colleges and universities, including Stanford. The US State Department has stated plainly that the CCP created the CSSA to monitor Chinese students and mobilize them against views that dissent from the Party’s stance. The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission found in 2018 that CSSAs receive guidance from the CCP through Chinese embassies and consulates, and that they are active in carrying out work consistent with Beijing’s United Front strategy. In some cases, the local Chinese consulate must approve CSSA presidential candidates. Documents obtained by Foreign Policy showed that at Georgetown, the CSSA accepted embassy funding amounting to roughly half its total annual budget. The Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Stanford, or ACSSS, is a recognized student organisation that receives university support and funding. The CCP’s United Front uses these organisations as vehicles for surveillance and influence. American universities are supposed to be places where people can think and speak freely. Right now, for too many students, they are not.
