44 years ago, a truck driver named Larry Walters decided he was tired of just watching jets fly over his backyard - he wanted to join them. On July 2, 1982, Larry sat in a cheap Sears lawn chair in Los Angeles, which he had tied to 42 massive helium weather balloons. His plan was simple: float up about 30 feet, enjoy the view for a few hours while drinking a beer, and then use a pellet gun to pop a few balloons and gently drift back down. But he made a massive miscalculation. When his friends cut the anchor rope, he didn't float gently, he shot up like a rocket, leveling out at 16,000 feet (4,800 meters), freezing cold and drifting right into the flight path of bewildered commercial airline pilots. One pilot actually radioed the tower to report, "I've just passed a guy in a garden chair." Despite the terror, Larry was well-stocked. He had packed a survival kit for the trip: - A BB gun (to pop the balloons). - A CB radio (to talk to his friends). - Sandwiches. - A six-pack of Miller Lite. - A camera. After 45 minutes of drifting, he finally worked up the courage to shoot some balloons. He descended, but eventually dropped the gun and drifted uncontrollably into power lines, causing a 20-minute blackout in a Long Beach neighborhood. He climbed down unhurt, was immediately arrested, and when asked why he did it, gave the legendary reply: "A man can't just sit around." He was arrested (mainly for violating FAA regulations), fined $1,500 by the FAA for operating an “unairworthy aircraft” without a license Sadly, not everyone who tried this was so lucky. In 2008, a Brazilian priest named Father Adelir Antônio de Carli tried to replicate the stunt using 1,000 party balloons to raise money for a charity. Tragically, he was blown out to sea and disappeared; his body was found months later.

I still can’t believe we announced we were holding a celebratory rally for Sophie in Seattle of all places, received immense online pushback, even from WNBA players themselves, including abusive and threatening voicemails/emails, and then we showed up anyway with balloons & a lifesize Sophie, and just…. nothing happened? I had nightmares last night that I would lead my group to their death. Folks were making plans for who would take their pets and last minute wills. (I kind you not.) Turns out we outnumbered the opposition about 10 to 1, plus men came out to protect us. Thank you men! We had a great time & took a lot of pictures. People wore a lot of XX-XY Athletics gear. We had some good conversations with normies. (There were like 4 sad counter protestors that SF_TERF_CENTRAL had a fun time with. 🤣🤣🤣) Has the tide turned?!??
