Who's Really Profiting from Alberta's Data Centers? The Alberta government calls data centers a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. But what's the return for Albertans? These projects demand enormous amounts of electricity, natural gas, water and public infrastructure. They place new pressures on municipalities and local communities, yet the government has provided very little information about the long-term economic benefits to Albertans. How much provincial tax revenue will they generate? What will they cost taxpayers and how will they affect affordability and inflation? Why are municipalities and local residents being sidelined in the process? I'm not opposed to data centers. Alberta should absolutely compete for investment. But attracting investment at any cost isn't good government. A local utility company in Illinois has plans to help lower residents electrical bills They will be requiring new data centers and planned data centers to sign 10 year contracts saying they will be responsible for paying for upgrade costs and electricity usage costs “That means any new data centers would be on the hook for power upgrades and any energy they plan to use, even if the data center ends up not getting built or if they don't use as much power as planned or if they close. So if they use the power that they're applying for, then they'll pay their fair share of the cost of maintaining and building our grid through their rates”

Then that private equity firm sold it to a different private equity firm. Once the new private equity owners were in control, they raised bills again. We REFUSE to be a generation of renters. We refuse to accept a future where billionaire private equity firms like Blackstone come into our communities, buy up entire neighborhoods, take homes off the market, and put them back up for rent. That is not the American dream. It’s not the American dream to let companies, backed with overseas capital from China and using tax cheats, buy homes out from under us and turn America into a nation of renters. The American dream is impossible unless you own the dirt under your feet—unless you own a piece of the community you help build. Yet when Blackstone comes in, they won’t sell to you; they’ll only rent to you. When my parents bought their first home in 1996, there were two other families bidding. They bought that home for $104,000. They weren’t bidding against private equity firms with balance sheets in the hundreds of billions that can outbid every single one of us. It’s already hard enough to get a mortgage with today’s interest rates (cc: Jerome Powell) And when you finally do—after saving, working, and doing everything right—a private equity firm swoops in and prices you out of the home you earned. That is unacceptable. Thanks to the Tenth Amendment and our federalist system, the power to fix this lies with our state governments. Here in Florida and across the country, governors must act—must make it illegal for giant private equity firms like Blackstone to buy up our neighborhoods and turn us into a generation of renters. NextEra already owns Florida Power & Light, which built its business on gouging customers. Almost 30% of every FPL customer’s bill goes straight to profit – 2x a normal utility. In 2024, FPL cut power to 1.3 million homes.
