Probably old news now, but the CSS View Transition API is SUPER cool! Entry/exit layout animations like this used to be super complicated or require giant libraries. Now it's like 2 lines of JS, and a few lines of CSS if you want to customize the animation. Amazing! 🤯

flushSync is fine. This is the exact type of thing it is designed for. Actually in this case it may even be faster. When startViewTransition is called it freezes the DOM to take a snapshot. Flushing synchronously reduces the time the page is frozen because updates occur immediately rather than waiting unnecessarily.

Super clean. I immediately tried clicking the add button before the current transition had finished, finding that it then ignores that click. Limitation of freezing the DOM, or is there a way to stack the transitions?

Yeah it’s a limitation of the current API but I think the spec authors are aware of it so hopefully it’ll get better eventually

In this case it’s required for the view transition to take effect. The DOM updates have to occur inside that callback

Clay's transition API is starting to shape up. It's modeled on the simplicity of CSS transitions (i.e. just specify property, duration and tween function, the rest is automatic) but with the ability to override the tween function so you can do whatever you want, frame by frame.

CSS Trick 📜 You can trigger text highlights on scroll with scroll-driven animations 😎 mark { animation: highlight; animation-timeline: view(); } @keyframes highlight { to { --lit: 1; }} mark span { background-position: calc(var(--lit) * -110%) 0; transition: background 1s; } The trick is using a scroll-driven animation to flip a custom property on a element 🎚️ You flip the value between 0 and 1, and that transitions the background position of the element mark { --lit: 0; animation: highlight steps(1) both; animation-timeline: view(); animation-range: entry 100% cover 10%; } The background has to be applied on a child of the mark to see the change in the custom property 👀 mark span { background: linear-gradient( 120deg, yellow 50%, transparent 50%) 110% 0 / 220% 100% no-repeat; background-position: calc(var(--lit) * 110%) 0; transition: background-position 1s; } The trick is to set the background-size so that it's bigger than the element and then split the background-color in the middle using a linear-gradient 🤙 And the property flips fills in the color 🫶 That's it! AWESOME NEWS! We now have a new feature on the earthquake program that my viewers are going to be mind blown to see. THE MOON, its phases and closeness / distance from Earth! This data was a feature on the old earthquake program I used to use, but now it looks like a real moon, and orbits earth when I want. I can turn it off or on at a whim, and show it when necessary!!! Super cool stuff Grok is doing!

A visual comparison of HTML-in-Canvas vs rasterizing DOM to a canvas texture (side-by-side below, compare average capture times) Existing approaches to pull web content into canvas are slow and lossy: - Animations glitch, or don't play at all - CSS replication is imprecise - Clogs up the main thread, other animations lag HTML-in-Canvas (texElementImage2D) lets the browser's own compositor map CSS layouts, animations, and transitions precisely into canvas/WebGL textures — one native call instead of thousands of JS style reads. It's currently available behind an experimental Chrome flag. Really cool, and I can't wait for it to become mainstream.

CSS Tip! ⭐️ You can use the lh (line-height) unit on background layers to emphasize multiple lines of text responsively without extra elements! ⚡️ h1 { background: linear-gradient(white, white), grey; background-size: 100% calc(var(--lines) * 1lh), 100% 100%; background-clip: text; color: transparent; } Here you emphasize the first two lines of the heading with white using a sized background-image layer It has a size of 2lh ✨ Then the rest of the element is colored with whatever other colors you want to use as layers. If you watch the video, you can see different colors used for different lines and then fade it out if you wish. You could do whatever you like with it 😎 Neat part is that it's responsive. The font-size is set with a clamp and you can resize the viewport or the element and the number of lines emphasized will remain 🤙 Last but not least, make sure to use background-clip: text and color: transparent so the background shines through 🔥 Also, note that if you're only looking to highlight the first line, you can still use the :first-line pseudo 🫶 Have a play with it and see what you can come up with!
